Flying with toddler - wwyd

Travelling overseas with 18 month old in a month's time. The flight has two legs, one is to London (1 hour) and then another 4 hours abroad. We will have his car seat and stroller checked in. If we fly with separate and cheaper airlines the journey will be very reasonably priced, but we will have to collect his equipment and check it in once more for the second leg of the flight. If we book both flights with the same company they will transfer everything but it will be about 500 pounds more expensive.
What would you do??

Booked all on one ticket. Otherwise any delays in the first flight are all down to you to sort.

If it is the same terminal I would do different companies. If it is different terminals probably not, because transferring the bags between say terminal 3 and terminal 5 in Heathrow requires a tube journey and you can't take a luggage trolley. Did it with a massive car seat and it was a total pain.

Wouldn’t you want the buggy in between? Why are you taking a car seat? Can’t you rent one or use a taxi or usually walk?

How reliable is the first flight?

TropicalTrama · 19/08/2023 17:20

All on one ticket no question. The cost is worth it to ensure that the airline takes the responsibility for getting you (and your stuff) through to your final destination. I’d be more worried about getting stranded at the layover if flight 1 is delayed, with no solution except get out your credit card than the stroller tbh. But also I would 100% get a carry on pram, absolutely worth it for knowing you have it, it won’t go missing of get damaged and if you get delayed, he’s tired and you have to make a quick dash for the next plane it’s invaluable. You can buy cheap ones or even rent a YoYo.

All in one ticket definitely. I missed a connecting flight years ago and that was stressful enough, even with the airline sorting it all out and no kids to deal with.

Booked all in one ticket!! And thanks for the tips around renting a cabin approved stroller, will defo do that.

You could also look at a trunki to pull him around on - I think mine were around that age when we first used them.
