I’ve only ever bought brand new with tags stuff for my son off here and washed before use

i just seen a cute outfit for my baby girl sue January and was going to get and wash it before use anyway! The seller is from a smoke free home and said it was worn about twice / 3 times

anyone ever bought used off here?

if I wash it before I put it on baby girl that’s fine isn’t it

Yep - 14 month old DS has a wardrobe full of his cousins hand me downs, vinted, Car boot etc. Always wash before I use them.

I do buy him some new bits but honestly it's primark, ASDA, TESCO etc.

Most baby stuff lasts 3 months at a time. I save the money I would have spent buying everything brand new toland spend it on days out with him instead.

He won't remember anything but I will remember the time we went to the zoo over that really expensive outfit he wore for 3 hours then pood and puked over.

SkankingWombat · 18/08/2023 22:38

Yes, I use it quite a bit for both buying and selling. I've had some really good buys, and earned back a decent amount from outgrown clothing. I agree that you need to check listings carefully and always assume the condition is a level lower than stated (if it turns out to be realistically graded, it's a bonus). I've always bought a mixture of new and second hand, although when DCs were babies that meant going to Nearly New sales plus a bit of eBay. I've bought a large amount of toys and equipment second hand from Facebook marketplace too, although haven't found that good for clothes. Good for the planet and good for your bank balance - what's not to love?

gawditswindy · 18/08/2023 23:09

Nice 'dressy' things and dressy coats are good buys as they're barely worn anyway and cost a fortune. I've had nearly new monsoon dresses for £5.

Not vinted but I buy mostly secondhand clothes for DD.

gggbbbnnn · 18/08/2023 23:28

Frequent buyer and seller. Never had an issue and I'll never go back to buying brand new stuff, it's ridiculous the price I used to pay for stuff! Agree that it doesn't have the same stigma as it used to

Yes I do

Spottypineapple · 19/08/2023 05:28

If course it's fine or the site wouldn't be doing so well.

Most of DDs stuff is from Vinted and 90% of the time it smells like laundry when I arrives so I don't even wash it. Sorry Mumsnet ;)

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/08/2023 06:33

Is vinted like eBay or charity shops

So second hand

Wash it and will be fine

amylou8 · 19/08/2023 06:53

I don't understand why any one would buy new now, especially stuff for babies that they grow out of in weeks.

Loobydoobies · 19/08/2023 07:21

Yep. A lot of stuff is barely used as they grow so quickly, and is a fraction of the price. It's also better for the environment.

When they get towards nursery age and everything is covered in paint, you will definitely see the value in not paying full price!

Peony654 · 19/08/2023 07:26

Pretty much exclusively! New is such a waste for kids. Of course it’ll be fine, mad to think otherwise

DaddyPigMustDie · 19/08/2023 07:41

Yes absolutely, I have 3 kids and almost all of their clothes are second (3rd, 10th!) hand.

Toddler101 · 18/08/2023 21:12

Yep and for good measure I add antibacterial laundry cleanser to my machine along with my usual washing powder when I wash anything 2nd hand.....

I don't even wash it. Only if it smells a bit. I don't see the point. Antibac seems an overkill.

Swanslikeme · 19/08/2023 08:26

I'm genuinely don't understand what could make it not fine for a baby?

Obviously you would wash it in case of dirt, but are we talking worry about fleas, bed bugs etc after washing - if so I think that is very unlikely.

JohnFinlaysNewTeeth · 19/08/2023 08:26

Are you really asking if it’s ok to put 2nd hand clothes on a baby? Fuck sake man.

Mrsmch123 · 19/08/2023 09:01

I do for my toddler. I see to be a bit funny about it then quickly realised that there is some fantastic stuff. I buy new with tags as personal preference by I wash it before he wears it. I sell on it too. Then pop the money into my kids saving account.

Himawarigirl · 19/08/2023 09:24

I have three children and buy all their clothes on it. My eldest loves it as she can get more clothes than she otherwise might and I love that you can search by brands that I know fit them or for things they like, such as ‘Lego’ or ‘minecraft’ when looking for tops etc. I started buying stuff for myself on there too. Often people are selling it as they never ended up wearing it much so it’s basically new.

ChangingTheNarative · 19/08/2023 09:25

My latest vinted purchase! I absolutely love it

Just coming back to say I don't think I've bought a new coat for my 4.5 year old. Can't think of any anyway. I start looking in summer for next winter and have had some amazing bargains. We've always needed one for home and one for nursery (easier if it just stays there) so it would be very expensive to buy two nice, warm winter coats plus raincoats.

One thing I don't tend to buy second hand is shoes as I want to know they fit my son's feet rather than someone else's. But I would buy new with tags on a size up once I knew the shoes fitted him, happily. And I but second hand wellies.

I also use Marketplace for any big plastic toys, as they're insanely expensive in the shops but people are basically giving them away once their kids have outgrown them.

itsallnewnow · 19/08/2023 11:00

I've bought loads second hand for me and my baby is this even something people worry about?
Bless you op you must have such a lovely privileged life Grin your baby will be totally fine ❤️

Clefable · 19/08/2023 11:08

I just got a barely used Didrikson winter coat for DD1 for £20. I bought the same coat new in a smaller size two winters ago for more than £70. I bloody love Vinted! I check there first before buying anything now. I got a brand new multipack of tops for DD1 with tags still on; they were still available on the shop website at triple the price.

PinkyU · 19/08/2023 11:10

I’m probably being cynical but this screams AI, for sound bytes to promote vinted.

peytonn · 19/08/2023 11:12

@PinkyU hate to break it to you but you are :)

I only mentioned Vinted as I prefer the shipping options and feel it has more on it. EBay has had its day, Depop I find more designer wear on and I don’t tend to visit charity shops!

Am I still AI trying to promote eBay Depop or charity shops now…

Thank you all for the responses. I will recognise I’ve always been lucky enough to buy everything new but I learned from having my son, who I spent a ton on especially expensive knitted Spanish outfits (which run tiny and wash awful by the way)

thank you also for the tip of antibacterial laundry cleanser! That’ll put my mind at ease a bit :)
