Mortifying - lifelong nailbiter and not sure how to clip DD's nails 'nicely'

As the post says, I think I've been a nailbiter since the age of 10. My fingernails look so awful. I had a little baby about 2 months ago and realised I have no idea how to really clip her nails nicely. I do use a nail clipper for my toenails (sorry I'm so embarrassed right now having to explain this) and I just cut them straight but I feel like finger nails are different.

Please could I have some advice about how to clip baby nails, I don't want to destroy it misshape my poor baby's nails .

You can get electric nail files on Amazon which are like sanders. They rotate fast and sand down the nail rather than clipping them. We used those until he was about 18 months old and more able to understand he needed to sit still and let us clip them properly.

The main thing is to make sure you leave a little bit of white when clipping. And pull the back of the finger away from the nail so you don't catch it.

Are you talking about nail shape? Do leave a little bit of white, but you want to make three main snips. Straight across the top, then angled at each side so that the nail is nice and round. You can make more cuts if there are any sharp bits.

Basically, don't go too short and make sure they aren't sharp anywhere. That's all that matters.

I always bit my babies nails off after the incident we don't talk about. Just do it while they are feeding and they don't even notice Wink

As an aside, I bit my nails for 30 years and this year I've finally managed to grow them! I had to get acrylics on regularly for 8 weeks but since then I've managed not to bite them. They weren't healthy when the acrylics came off, but I kept painting them and they broke -repeat- until I now have nice long nails Smile it is possible!

I just do one snip straight across with the nail clipper. Now a toddler and she just about tolerates one snip per nail and her nails look fine so I just go with that

I used to bite all of my babies nails, I found it too dangerous with the clippers. When they got a bit older I used little nail scissors.

I did acrylic nails for my brother's wedding and then was quite pleased with how much they gre underneath... And then I had a stressful moment and they were gone :(

Electric one for babies! Bought it for about 12 quid on Amazon when my ds was 5 months old. Wish I'd used it from birth!

Just cut them straight across. They don't need to be aesthetically pleasing. They just need to ge short enough for her not to scratch herself and if she hates it then one snip straight is the quickest way to do it.
