Forceful vomit of entire feed - too much formula?

I'm wanting to introduce some formula to my end 12 week baby. She has cmpa and reflux so we've got amino acid formula and we add gaviscon. Tonight I tried giving a 6oz feed. She had about 4oz then the whole thing came up like a river. Very very forcefully. Shot out of her mouth.

She's had smaller amounts of this combo over the last few days and this didn't happen. It did happen once a few days ago when she had a full bottle.

So is this due to the volume of formula? Am I meant to introduce smaller feeds for a previously ebf baby? It was really distressing to see. I'm desperate to give her some formula because she's currently feeding every hour round the clock and I feel like I'm about to lose it.

U might have to give her smaller feeds just so that tummy can get used to it and the build up to a full bottle she could also be drinking it to fast what size teat is on bottle x

@mummybear247 thanks so much for responding, I'm so upset by what I saw. He's a very sicky baby generally but seeing the way this came up has floored me. The teat was size 1. It's a Tommy tippee closer to nature, anti collic bottle. Most similar to the breast is what I read.

We used to have this issue with TT bottles OP as it caused DS to be able to drink too much too quickly. We changed to the Mam bottles and they worked much better. But it was trial and error with multiple bottles before we found the right one for DS.

If the forceful vomitting continues you should see your GP about possible pyloric stenosis

StarlitSummerNights · 16/08/2023 20:41

@hiredandsqueak she's such a vomity baby generally so I did get her checked and there's no evidence of it thankfully. She's only vomited forcefully twice and both times it's been this week after she's had 4 or 5 Oz of formula 😞

What's her most recent weight?

Did your poor little one bring it all up too? It's just like a river gushing from the mouth 🙁 she took almost an hour to drink it so I'm not sure if she did take it too quickly? Although she did just have it passively in her mouth fit big chunks so maybe she did gulp too much too quickly toward the end. We've got Dr brown bottles so maybe I'll try them too. I'm now too scared to give her more 😞

I would give her a smaller amount. But honestly this isn't completely abnormal. My DD would do it sometimes and she was formula fed from birth. Please don't let it get to you too much, it will be fine.

It maybe best just to give smaller feeds for the time being then I use the same bottles for my 7 month old and they have been fine for him but my dd she had the same ones and was always sick on them so I had to change but it may just be she's a sicky baby as u have said it can so upsetting to see them being sick but once she's able to sit up on her own it will all be a distant memory good luck op

In my experience this is often due to wind/trapped wind

I understand that you need a break from the feeding, with CMPA and reflux formula might not be the answer.

I have a CMPA child and he would throw up every bottle of formula he had. We combi fed and the specialist stuff was better, but he’d still bring it up.

If she has reflux she might be sucking for comfort. Will she take a dummy?

Another option would be to use a Haakaa style pump to collect milk while you’re feeding. You can use that to give a bottle when you need a break.

Have you spoken to any breastfeeding councillors? The NCT have an infant feeding line you can ring every day.
