Do you buy clothes for your kids on ebay?

I have bought some stuff but have generally been disappointed - does anyone buy successfully and get bargains? How?

I buy a bit of stuff from Ebay. Generally I make sure I buy the best brands I can, the ones that I know will wash & wear well (Next, Gap, some designers, but not all, as some fade horribly).

The condition has to be stated clearly in the description and it has to be excellent/like new/barely worn, etc...If it doesn't say that, I will email to ask details.

If the item doesn't match up to the description on receipt I give the vendor the chance to sort it out.

Generally, they'll make some kind of offer. Most are just parents getting shot of their little ones stuff. If they don't, I would consider reporting them to Paypal, for goods significantly different from description, but I'd think about how much it cost me, what should I realistically expect, etc. I haven't had to do it yet.

I've had some good buys, some naff ones...but more positive experiences than bad ones. And I never spend more than I can afford to lose, so if anything does go tits up, I won't be crying into my cocoa about it!

I do like to buy new stuff from Ebay, but only if the price is right...and I ALWAYS consider the whole price...not just the final bid price.

Hope you have more luck in future (if you decide to perservere).

i buy lots for DS2- a few reasons...

Cheaper (if you're thrifty and tot up postage)
Better for the environment
Don't mind so much if he stains or rips them eating / playing.

I usually do last minute bids early in the morning. I also get brands i wouldn't buy usually like Next, for bugger all. As long as they have good feedback and sensible postage, i've never been disappointed.

I find some people buy (or get bought) lots of nice expensive things for their kids, which are either never worn or nearly new. DS2 has had loads of tops and jeans for £1 each.

I have bought clothing from Ebay but not now - or rarely anyway. It's usually disappointing. I like to see clothes before I buy them.

Some excellent second hand bargains at charity shops. Cheaper than Ebay and no faffing with postage, feedback and paypal.

I really don't want to seem "up-myself' about this, but there are several reasons I buy the children - and myself - clothes on ebay and from charity shops. One is the price - if you're careful you can get amazing bargains. The other is that buying cheap clothes fron the chains almost always involves a level of exploitation of the workers who make ths stuff somewhere in the world. Often these workers are children. Also, buying a lot of "throw away" type clothes contributes massively to land fill and to lots of other environmental problems. So it's much better all round to spend the money you would spend on a Tesco t shirt on a second hand Boden one, for esample.

I used to get a lot from ebay when DS was smaller-but i have been more disapointed lately. As others have said clothes get more worn as children-especially boys-get older.
And although i agree with the ethical bit, I also found I was buying lots of 'stuff' (especially in bundles) that i didn't like that much and didn't fit so well. I now buy most things in pumpkin patch sale-like the fit/quality, think they are fairly ethical and they 'go together' so i can mix and match more. Consequently we have less 'stuff' in his wardrobe but it all gets worn as i only buy what i really like.

i have had some lovley things for ds from ebay but i have also had some dissapointing things.
There is always a risk with buying anything you can't go and veiw first.

I LOVE buying "bundles"! I always get the child I'm buying for to llok through and pick what they like, then they get their friends round and it all goes to good homes eventually!

nappyaddict · 19/04/2008 17:59

i always do but i never buy tshirts or those cotton shorts cos they are often bobbly and you can't tell from the picture.

I love ebay!
Love the excitement of little parcels arriving with the postman!

blanktyblank · 19/04/2008 18:16

havent tried ebay yet so cant say but my sister just last week recieved a bundle from there and very happy it was mostly next and gap clothing all in good nick and it worked out 50p per item

BroccoliSpears · 19/04/2008 18:17

Agree that the older / bigger your children get the less likely you are to nab a bargain.

I get some fab bargainous bundles on American ebay though. The postage is high, but the exchange rate makes it all reasonable.

ScienceTeacher · 19/04/2008 18:23

I have done fairly well on ebay for children's clothes. I haven't done it for a while, but did when we lived in the US. There, local shopping was fairly dull, and Ebay bundles were far more interesting.

As for value - you get some good some bad. It all evens out.

Yup, for similar reasons to Seeker. I can't really justify buying anything new (bar the occasional item- I'm only human) for dd or me when there is so much out there - and people are treated so badly to make it anyway.

Tend to buy a lot on ebay because we have rubbish charity shops in my local area - except the huge Oxfam in Dalston (a bus away). I also buy much better quality clothes than I could afford - like dd's beautiful roses party dress for about £6 incc. postage, and Primigi shoes for £4.50 total (rather than Woolies finest ). My mum is fab - she has loads of charity shops near her so buys dd lots of second-hand toys/clothes/puzzles etc.
