9 month old too big for car seat

Hey guys! My 9 month old DS is too big for his car seat, the seatbelt is slightly tight for him now and his feet reach off the car seat. What’s the next car seat that I should buy for him? I’m confused and don’t know which car seat is next.

What car seat do you have currently and what weight is your nine month old?

dreamerkr · 15/08/2023 17:05

Baby car seat, the one he’s had since birth and it’s a Joie one. He’s 12-13kg

You sure about the weight? My tall 3 year old is only 14kg

That's almost 2 stones. Do you mean he is 12-13lb?

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 15/08/2023 17:10

His feet hanging off isn't an issue. Where is his head on the seat?

Happierwithouthim · 15/08/2023 17:11

My 10 month old niece is 25lbs so yes it is possible!

The average weight for a 9 month old is 8-9kg so he is on the much heavier side for a baby. How tall is he?

PuttingDownRoots · 15/08/2023 17:12

Have you removed any inserts?

Facebook has a helpful car seat group - Car Seat Safety UK where you can ask for advice. Rear facing is absolutely the safest option and there are a number of extended rear facing car seats that can last until 18kg, 25kg, and a few I believe over and above this (to age around 6 or 7).

BertieBotts · 15/08/2023 17:19

She's talking about the weight limit of the car seat, not the weight of the baby.

OP at 9 months you need a bigger rear facing seat :)

You could choose something that spins, has the option to forward face later if you want to (from 15 months minimum; it's safer to rear face as long as possible) and lasts until around age 4. Popular options here are Britax Dualfix, Cybex Sirona, Joie 360 Spin or Maxi Cosi Mica. They will only last until age 4 if your baby is average size.

Or you could choose something which is only rear facing, but lasts much longer, more like up to age 7 (less if your child is tall for age). These are a good choice if you have a baby on the bigger side or if you just want to rear face as long as possible/get the safest seat possible. Good options here are Britax Max Way Plus or Axkid Minikid.

If your baby is on the smaller side for their age and is not yet sitting up then you will need one that is suitable from a slightly younger age. The spinning up to age 4 seats work well here, or if you want the longer lasting + extra safety, Besafe Stretch is a good option.

I would not personally recommend the seats that go up to age 12; they tend to be a bit of a false economy and they don't perform that well for safety because they combine too many features into one seat.

You can also continue to use the seat that you have until your baby's head is at the top of the shell if you want to. Legs over the end doesn't matter. Make sure that you move the straps up to the larger settings, don't leave them on the newborn setting. If it's the i-Snug seat that you have, it is also outgrown at 75cm even if the baby's head isn't yet at the edge.

Oh wait no now I have re-read.

OP if your baby is 12kg at 9 months then you need either Besafe Stretch, Axkid Minikid 3/4 or Britax Max Space.

dreamerkr · 15/08/2023 17:26

Wait idk what I wrote lol! He’s 10kg.

Feet off the end isn't an issue. Have you checked the back to see if the shoulder straps go up more. If it's the Joie juva and he is approaching 13kg then yes he needs a new seat. If it's the i-juva he can be 75cm in length before requiring a new seat (I think but do check). Seeing as he seems on the higher centiles I would go for a 25kg extended rear facing seat next. The axkid seats are very popular but several brands do them now.

Another vote for extended rear facing car seat up to 25kg and check out the Car Seat Safety UK Facebook group mentioned above.

We wanted an isofix one so went for Axkid One (23kg limit). It's great 😃

10kg is fairly average for a 9mo 🙂 so see my first post.
