Snuzpod crib a little too low for bed

Hello, so we have a hand me down bedside crib (old snuzpod) which we are planning to use at my mums house, as we are planning to stay between hers and ours.

Problem is as it's an old model, it doesn't go as high as the newer Snuzpods and our bed is quite high. There's about a 4-5inch difference between my mattress and the baby's mattress.

My question is, is this something safe and that I can work with, should the baby mattress really be flush with the bed

... not sure if I should swap beds with a sibling, or just use it as a stand-alone crib rather than a bedside co sleeper - which would mean I have to get out of bed during the night, which i assume a lot of people do anyway.

I'm a FTM so no idea of logistics tbh, planning to BF.

Not sure if it's 'correct' or not but I use the SnuzPod slightly lower than my mattress by choice (they do sit flush if I want them too). It's attached tightly with straps to my bed so isn't going anywhere (I check regularly it hasn't slackened), I have the side down so it's open, but as it is so tight up to my bed there is no gap but creates a small lip up to my mattress so if baby rolls, they stay in the SnuzPod rather than roll into my bed. I have a (light) duvet I wouldn't want baby to roll into my bed with.

I used the Chico Next2me with my firstborn and that was slightly lower than my bed (that wasn't ever flush with my mattress) so I guess I replicated it with the SnuzPod 😆

I don't get up at night. I sit up feed baby and toss them back when finished. That's the whole point of having them attached to the bed.

When my baby outgrows the SnuzPod they'll go into a standalone cot and I'll have to start getting out of bed, but not yet.

Do what works for you within the realms of your own risk averse ness.

Ahh yes I remember now! I found this info on updates to safety regulations around the newer snuzpods so it helped me feel confident to keep baby mattress slightly lower than mine:

*What is the new safety standard for bedside cribs?

All new bedside cribs manufactured since November 2020 have to meet a new safety standard (with the catchy name BS EN 1130:2019) that introduced new and more rigorous safety requirements for bedside cribs. However, you may find some older versions of cribs are still on sale that only match the previous safety standard. Slowly these will disappear from stores and the only ones available will meet the new standard.

The most significant new requirement for BS EN 1130:2019 is for a 120mm high barrier to be present around the sides of the crib, to ensure your baby is not able to roll off their own mattress onto yours. This means that new bedside cribs can no longer have complete drop-down sides - many now have 'half-height' walls instead.

This allows your baby to be positioned next to you with the crib lined up to your bed, but their mattress will be sunk a little lower, providing more of a protective barrier. All the cribs featured in our list comply with these new BS EN 1130:2019 safety requirements.* www.snuz.co.uk/sleep-centre/sleep-talk/snuzpod4-held-to-a-higher-standard/#

I had a next to me but kept the side up as I was worried about my duvet going onto him/me rolling into him (which in hindsight is ridiculous🙈😅😂)

@Toddler101 thank you SO much, this is all very insightful!!

I actually have the newest snuzpod at my own place and it still sits a little lower, but has the new wall thing so doesn't seem like an issue.

I guess the crib being slightly lower than me could be similar to creating a barrier, baby definitely can't roll into my bed and zip doesn't go all the way down.

Might buy the divan strap attachments for the old snuzpod and see how it goes, standards always change and it does indeed come down to calculating our own risks

@flowerchop if it's only for really occasional use I'd probably just use the SnuzPod as a standalone crib on reflection, the straps can be a faff for the sake of a night here or there. When we go away for a night, we take the SnuzPod bassinet from ours with us in the carboot but not the frame and just plonk it on the floor next to the bed when we get there.

But if you're going to be using it more often or can leave it in situ, I'd get the straps and set it up 👍
