Stock / gravy for 1 yr old

Now baby is just over 1 am I right in thinking she can eat what we eat?

We don't cook with salt but I read somewhere they shouldn't have stock or gravy but we eat that in our normal foods!

Caserole, spaghetti bolognaise, etc

I cook all my one food and don't use pouches
Baby is cmpa but just starting milk ladder

We went out for a roast today and she did some of my dinner with some gravy

Should I not be doing that in future ?

It's very confusing

Also things like homemade currys I use paste and stock so should she not be eating that?

Thank you in advance

I am not sure what the official recommendation is but I’m still using low salt alternatives where available otherwise I’m giving my 13 month old what we eat so I’m still using low salt stock but giving her curries or stir fry’s with things like soy sauce or fish sauce. When eating out she tries anything we have - a bit of salt is fine if it’s only the occasional meal. I’d probably go easy on the amount of gravy but let her try a little bit.

I use gravy with no added salt and with things like bolognaise I would take DCs portion out before adding a stock cube. The odd full salt gravy like you gave her today won’t be hurt though.

Just use low salt stock cubes but I wouldn't overthink it, unless you are feeding curry daily, the salt in the paste isn't an issue . Mine ate normal food from 6 months

If you’re homecooking, you will inevitably use a lot less salt than if you are buying pre prepared / ultra processed food; so I really wouldn’t worry. Much better for baby to eat what you eat.

HAF1119 · 13/08/2023 17:47

I'd not 'season' with salt except after dishing up to add to taste and none for baby - and I'd get the low salt options of gravy. That's what we did with ours, but we would also sometimes do something with a paste that contained salt and not think on it too much providing it's a one off

TropicalTrama · 13/08/2023 17:50

I wouldn’t season with salt and would opt for the low salt stock cube/bisto but beyond that I wouldn’t worry.

charadam · 13/08/2023 18:16

Oh brilliant thanks all - will get some lower salt stock but stay away from gravy! I thought it was ok but still wanted to check

Can see you can get baby stock but I like her having what we eat as it's so much easier x

I wouldn't worry too much, I like you cool most things from scratch, I actually don't add stock to bolognaise just tinned toms, ketchup and Lea and Perrins which is what I have always done.one wise curry's I don't make from stock generally do coconut milk based curries for the dc. This is how I have always don't it though and things I usually use stock for I still do. Gravy I use meat juices, and thickener usually with something lien redcurrent likely for some flavour generally but I am also catering for a coeliac so am more restricted anyway. Generally don't over think it and don't add salt and you should be ok.

Tisfortired · 13/08/2023 22:07

As others have said I just bought low salt stock, Kallo do ones called ‘very low salt’ cubes and season ours separately. Aldi do a 25% less salt gravy (granules) so I’m sure Bisto or similar must also so in the event we have a roast or what have you I drizzle a little of that on for DS.

charadam · 14/08/2023 08:17

Thanks guys - will definitely check out the low salt options
Her / out diet is pretty good so like all have said a drizzle here in there I'm sure is ok

Our child just ate what we did all cooked from scratch but didn’t overly worry about salt just seasoned after serving up their portion and in restaurants ate whatever food was there but the next day would aim for a zero salt food like plain fish and veg or something. It might have been luck but as he just had what we had he was exposed to a large range of foods both at home and in restaurants from a young age and has turned out to be a real foodie who eats nearly everything and loves trying new foods and restaurants.
