14 month old won't drink - I am demented

Has gone off her normal bottle. I've tried every cup under the sun (this isn't all of them). She doesnt get a drink unless I pour it into her mouth which isn't safe or pleasant for anyone.

Please some suggestions 😣

I’d just help them drink from a cup and carry on persevering with one or two of the bottles in the meantime.

GunkyAndGungey · 12/08/2023 21:34

Have you tried giving her a drink in a fruit shoot type bottle? Or just a normal china cup?

catgirl30 · 12/08/2023 21:34

She has a brain injury and can't bring hands to mouth, she shouts and obv then chokes if I pour it out of a cup

My 13mo is always super keen to drink out of “adult” cups/bottles so I use these if he’s not drinking. Works best when I put him on my hip and take a very enthusiastic sip out of a Chilly water bottle myself before offering it to him. He is also a fan of a plastic water bottle or a mug 🤷🏼‍♀️

See my other reply about brain injury. Should have mentioned it in the main post.

Since weaning she doesnt seem to want to suck anything, including her dummy.

OK well if desperate maybe try an ice lolly

TimeIhadaNameChange · 12/08/2023 21:51

I bought some Callipo type silicon moulds for the freezer. Would she lick thr ice, do you think?

No idea if these can work for kids but they are good for dementia pat who can't drink.

Is the problem about the taste of the drink or the type of cup? If it is the type of cup, I'd pick one and persist with offering the same cup for a quick drink at regular intervals. If she refuses, put it down and try again 20 mins later. And keep going. Make it dull and predictable and easy for her.

BLT24 · 12/08/2023 21:57

Have you tried an adult cup with a straw that you hold? Make sure she eats plenty of fruit as it has a high water content. Also try ice lollies?

Ohthatsabitshit · 12/08/2023 21:58

Talk to an OT or your consultant.

catgirl30 · 12/08/2023 21:59

She has a speech and language therapist and I've also brought it up with other health care professionals. To no avail.

  • add juice (very diluted) if you haven’t already. I know, shock horror, but my 18 month old stopped drinking water and this was the only thing he’d have (he’s now 3.5 and has good teeth for what thus might be worth)
  • try a straw - one of the softer reusable ones
booksandbrooks · 13/08/2023 11:01

Can you give her foods like watermelon that have a high water content to help?

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 13/08/2023 14:19

That must be so worrying for you. How is she today?

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 13/08/2023 16:44

@catgirl30 I'd post in the SN Children Section too. Maybe someone in there will have some more ideas Flowers

stargirl1701 · 13/08/2023 17:05

Soup, watermelon, cucumber, sorbet, ice lollies, etc are mostly water.
