Rusks

Little one is 3 but despite having tea around 5 still wakes up in night constantly asking for milk. Think they are hungry...

Can I ask re rusks... do they work on slow flow tests? I'm at a lot and want to try and put a risk in bottle.

Little one had 3 bottles of milk during the night!!!!

I can't up it anymore for wetting the bed!! Already do a 10pm nappy change and potty around 3am.. sleep is crap at the moment :(

It is a risk in a bottle. Serve it properly at supper time.

ConnieTucker · 12/08/2023 11:08

Why is your 3 year old having bottles at all?

Your cannot be feeding them
enough. All that milk will be filling then up so will impact their food intake.

what is their food and drink intake in a typical day.

Busubaba · 12/08/2023 11:08

It's a habit that they have got into rather than actually being hungry.

Have a cut off time in the evening for food and drink and give something like porridge as a supper to keep them full overnight until they grow out of it.

Supper? Something like weetabix but it sounds more like a habit, especially at 3.

timegoingtooquickly · 12/08/2023 11:14

Porridge before bed. Do you mean 3 if they are having bottles in the night?

Schemes · 12/08/2023 11:15

I'd give her some weetabix or porridge after bathtime.

LadyofLansallos · 12/08/2023 11:16

I would also go for a solid snack last thing before bed.

UnaVaca · 12/08/2023 11:17

Clearly isn’t eating enough. 5 is early, try a cup of warm milk or a snack before bed

liveforsummer · 12/08/2023 11:17

You can't put rusks in a bottle. They are also full of sugar so far from ideal for a late night snack both from an energy pot of view and obviously teeth. Replace the milk with water and give them a supper before bed. At 3 they aren't genuinely hungry it's just a habit

frenchnoodle · 12/08/2023 11:18

Sounds like she needs some food before bed. Then a comfort bottle of milk bedtime.

LadyPenelope68 · 12/08/2023 11:18

Rusks are first stage baby weaning food, not food for toddlers. They’re 3 years old, try giving some porridge or a wee rabid for supper instead. 3 bottles a night for a 3 year old sounds like habit possibly though rather than hunger.

ConnieTucker · 12/08/2023 11:22

also, stop giving juice in the night.

if she wake she gets water. Nothing else. Not even milk. But increase her food (good food) during the day.

it might be worth asking for your HV to visit and go through the sleeping, and her food intake with you.

Sprogonthetyne · 12/08/2023 11:23

At 3 they need a bigger tea if they are getting hungry, though the chances they're not hungry but just need it to fall asleep.

Once DH gave our 3yo night time milk & snack in what was a rear night waking. Before long, she was up every night expecting the same. It took weeks of very hard line "we're not getting out of bed to do or get you anything" before sleep improved again.

I'd just give the rusks as biscuits before bed (or another snack if they need it), then keep a cup of water next to the bed and offer nothing else. It will be awful for a few weeks while they adjust, but it's already awful by the sounds of it.

YellowDots · 12/08/2023 11:42

Three bottles of milk in the night is not what a three year old should be doing.

Do you want to tell us the whole routine?

It's hard to figure stuff like this out on your own I think because you are so damn tired! It's a vicious circle.

dementedpixie · 12/08/2023 11:43

No to milk in the night and to rusks in bottles
They need more food and less milk. Give food before bed and then its only water on offer if they wake.
And get rid of the bottles altogether

Clefable · 12/08/2023 11:46

3 YEARS? They are having 3 bottles overnight at 3 years old?

Healthy 3yos don't need milk or food during the night.

FizzyPop31 · 12/08/2023 11:52

Thanks..

I feel some comments are quite presumptuous... always plenty of food on offer for my little one.
Yesterday for example they didn't want to finish their dinner/tea. I can't force to eat.

Really struggling with this and then people turning around and implying I don't feed my child enough. Upsetting :(

You said their last meal was at 5pm. You can give food later than that too if they're hungry. They don't need all that milk as that amount will dull their appetite for actual food.

frenchnoodle · 12/08/2023 11:56

@FizzyPop31 I Think they are hungry...

No one is implying anything, your words are that "they" are Hungary, the solution is supper before bed not more milk or rusks.

Offer something before bed? Weetabix, banana etc.

Schemes · 12/08/2023 11:56

I don't think people are saying you are denying her food. I definitely had to change up my routine with my dd as she woke in the night. Despite eating all her meals. I gave her weetabix. No choices or added extras or excitement.

Dinner was at 5.30 then the weetabix was at probably seven.

Stop giving a 3 year old baby bottles ffs!!!

It is habit and you need to break it.

Honest to god!

We're trying to be helpful.
It's very unusual for a 3 year old to still be on bottles let alone at night. You child needs more food in the day or it's a habit that needs to stop. No one is criticising just trying to suggest foods to eat that could stop them waking up 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Maybe add some snacks in after tea, botties are not going to help here.

This poster is absolutely right.

I mean this kindly…. You asked for advice, and everybody is saying the same thing, but for some reason, you are being defensive and ignoring
this rather than listening. A three-year-old doesn’t need a bottle in the night, and the waking up and asking for something is a habit. You need to go cold turkey and you some advice on this thread.

Please take a deep breath and listen - the advice is good and meant well.

TropicalTrama · 12/08/2023 12:02

A 3YO shouldn’t be having bottles. 3 overnight is insane, mine never even had that as brand new newborns and you’re risking really bad teeth decay. I know a child that had to had their front teeth removed at 4 and they were only having the 1 bottle overnight but left in the cot to snack on. Rusks in a bottle are also a choking hazard not to mention a nutritionally devoid biscuit that belongs in 1960.

It sounds like a comfort habit from babyhood that’s never been broken and a combination of classic vicious circle- consuming too much overnight so not hungry enough during the day to eat enough to not be hungry the following night. No one is saying you aren’t offering food, just that by inappropriately continuing to offer so many bottles, they will never be hungry enough to eat properly.

You just need to go cold turkey and stop. Offer water in case of thirst but they won’t starve by having to wait until breakfast to eat. You’ll have a few bad nights while they adjust but it’s the right thing to do for DC and besides it doesn’t sound like anyone is sleeping well right now if they’re awake 3 times in the night and you’re making 3 bottles. So nothing to lose really.
