Baby feeds to sleep then wakes when burping

Hi everyone I‘m stuck in a vicious cycle. LO is 10 weeks & exclusively BF. When i want to put him to sleep I need to feed him. However he always wakes when I burp him (needs burping or else wakes up with trapped wind) and it’s a a vicious cycle! Up for the night feed currently & we have been in this cycle for 2 hours. Help!

My son was similar, what I did was fed him for 90% (ish) of his feed or what I expect him to drink, burped him and then fed him again a little for him to nod off.

Have you tried feeding laying down? Mine didn't need burping when I did that.

Caspianberg · 12/08/2023 05:56

Why do you burp him?
Ds was breastfed and I never burped. He was born abroad and when I asked midwife about burping she thought I was crazy. Said there’s no need, babies will just bring it up themselves if they need to. I don’t think breast fed babies get much excess air drinking either

My baby was the same although it improved with age, I used to do what the above poster said about burping then giving a little extra from the same breast just to get them asleep again.
@Caspianberg I was told by most midwives breastfed babies don't usually need burping, until my baby was uncomfortable with wind and I wasn't burping, then the health visitors said they do need burping! Yes they take less air during the feed but the act of digestion creates wind, my ebf baby couldn't bring that wind up herself until recently she needed a lot of burping. Now at 6 months she burps xwhen being sat up straight after feeds most of the time

@Bunny2006 - I don’t know. But honestly the entire country here doesn’t routinely burn babies, breastfed or bottle fed. It’s just not a thing.

Bunny2006 · 12/08/2023 06:28

@Caspianberg Fair enough! I see breastfed babies at breastfeeding group with much lower burping needs, whereas mine and the OP's by the sounds of it have more wind and need help. My baby would be arching her back, drawing knees up, crying if not burped and did the loudest burps when helped and instantly be comfortable :)

I would love to not burp but baby is far too windy for that

Following as in same situation

Have you tried a dummy? My baby was very sucky, always wanted to feed to sleep, but needed burping too. So I would burp him, then give him a dummy and he went back to sleep.

Newmama20232023 · 13/08/2023 09:18

Tried so many dummies but LO hates them, either won’t take them or spits them out after a few seconds!
