Weaning

Hi everyone,
We are 2 weeks into weaning, following Charlotte Sterling-Reed's book 'How to wean your baby', however baby still won't really eat purees from a spoon, will pick up finger food but not eat it and I'm not sure he's really swallowing any solids. We're trying to get him to drink water from a sippy cup too but he refuses it. Is this normal? Does anyone have any tips to help him feel more comfortable eating? Thanks.

All super normal this early on 😄 in terms of water I had more success with a straw cup - baby seemed more comfortable with it!
my baby is 9.5m now and Altho has taken food from a spoon comfortably since 6.5m it’s only been in the last few weeks that he’s eating much more finger foods and it’s gotten easier since he developed a pincer grasp and can handle smaller bits so please persevere with finger foods!

Had the nappy output changed? I thought that DD wasn't stalking much but the nappies definitely told a different story! Grin

How old is your baby?

After only two weeks this sounds perfectly normal. Try not to get hung up on how much they actually ingest. Weaning is about learning how to eat, and chew and how different textures feel in the mouth, and how to use their tongue to move food around in the mouth to chew it etc etc. Rather than just getting food into them. So it's quite an advanced skill to expect them to master in only a few weeks!

Solid Starts is an absolutely brilliant resource (website, Instagram and app) that I would encourage you to explore. Their advice is amazing and will give you confidence around weaning too. X

Weaning is about offering food, not them eating it. Keep going.

In the same boat with my 6.5 month old! She loves feeling the texture of food and throwing it on the floor 🙄 she's eating little bits as evidenced by her nappy (the day after trying lack beans was a particularly difficult nappy change lol). Agree with other PP, just keep offering

I'm also at this stage!
It's very messy but I've found letting him hold a spoon and showing him how I'm using one to eat has made him copy me and eat the spoon. I then sneak some mushed avo or banana onto the spoon. He tolerated this but not ella's peas! It's very messy as he flicks the spoon everywhere but it works!

Thanks everyone, so reassuring! I'm wondering also what counts as a 'meal' and when you can completely drop a milk feed for food?

I followed babies lead on dropping bottles - he basically refused them or only drank and oz or 2. It happened maybe around the 8m mark. He’s almost 10m now and starting to not drink his 2pm bottle so I imagine we will transition to 2 bottles shortly
