Lazytown and diets... rant

I am not sure if this should be under chat, but Lazytown.. does anyone else have children who think the world of this programme, to the point that their child thinks it's ok to eat fruit and veg and nothing else?!!

Fortunately ds1 (nearly 5) does eat other things, but lately he has started saying when he doesn't want to eat what he wants on a plate, well Sportacus just eats fruit and veg.. which in his eyes looks true if you watch the programme, even if I do say I think he would eat other things too!So there is my son who loves fruit and veg anyway but now thinks to be healthy he has the answer, though we are trying to reinforce the idea that actually people do need other foods.

Am so irritated am thinking of writing my views so if a new series comes out they might consider some things to think about.. but that's probably OTT!

Interesting. I have thought the same about the way they push the fruit & Veg thing - I think it is a bit obsessive, like eating one slice of pizza will turn you to stone or something....

Martha200 · 28/02/2008 10:43

Lol..it probably does help a lot of children with the fuit/veg thing, but might be nice if he had an egg for a change, though as pointed out by ds1 he has no cooker, though I think he has somewhere just like he has to have a toilet somewhere.. (doesn't bear thinking about the conversations we have over this recently.)

Really really hate this programme and think it is a) morally dubious - people who eat more healthy food are not better than those who just eat lard, they are just healthier b) encourages a really weird attitude to food and exercise

Ah, there is a Sportacus book that tackles that excuse! We had the same (even before Sportacus was on the scene)but the book describes all foods he eats, dairy, nuts, seeds, vegbread, egss etc.. The kids can choose between Robbie Rotten food or Sportacus food.

Mine initially went for Robbie Rotten

CrushWithEyeliner · 28/02/2008 10:54

LOL so would I.
I can't stand LazyTown, but that's anotehr thread

CrushWithEyeliner · 28/02/2008 10:55

I agree W&C it is weird

How can bread, cheese and tomato be okay but the same ingredients when grilled and turned into pizza be evil. do they all get tempted by the devil in the oven or something?

VictorianSqualor · 28/02/2008 11:56

I'm going to see Lazytown live tomorrow shall I have a word with Sporticus for you

Martha200 · 28/02/2008 12:21

Sounds a good idea Victoriansqualor, but he's not the real one is he?!! Would be interested to know how it is, as thinking of getting tickets for ds b'day, but only if he eats all his meat, eggs etc (will let him off the dairy as he is intolerant!)

haha, I often wonder how Sportacus can manage to do all that exercise having eaten only a few pieces of fruit! Totally unrealistic!

witchandchips · 28/02/2008 16:02

lol at Dr John Biffa having a peak at Sporticus lunch box

given the amount of junk that kids get thrown at them in product placement as well as "proper" advertising, the lazytown message of eating "only" fruit & veg is but a drop in the ocean.

the health of Iceland's children improved and sales of sweet fizzy drinks plummeted, acc to a paediatrician i spoke to from there...

bonkerz · 28/02/2008 16:05

my DD is 26 months and obsessed with eating sports candy! She will have apple for breakfast, snack and puddings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bundle · 28/02/2008 16:08

(meant to say health of Icelandic children improved after Lazytown was aired.. - theyve also had national campaigns to encourage healthy eating, tidying bedrooms - which naturally, I'm all in favour of..)

a diet of just fruit and veg can be prefectly fine, just ask a vegitarian. Plenty of carbohydrate in veg- potatos, yam, plantain, maize, rice & plenty of protein , pulses, nuts, beans.
Full range of vits & minerals may be harder if your child has a resticted range of veg but lots of healthy kids around the world never eat meat or bread or milk.

SPORTICUS HAD A MELT DOWN AFTER EATING A PRETEND APPLE!
Lazytown live was good Martha, my two (3&7) absolutely loved it, even the dancing

Highlander · 01/03/2008 14:07

DS1 loves the whole 'good energy' thing from Lazytown. He knows what the bad energy foods are and that they can give you holes in your teeth, although we've talked about the occasional sweet being perfectly OK.

However, he's 3.5 and it's only recently that the logic of it all has kicked in. I think it's great!

I have tried to get my ds to eat different kinds of fruit for the past 2 years, ive peeled, bribed, bought bright coloured friut and cut it into fancy shapes but he wouldnt touch it. Then he starts watching this crazy blue man doing unneccessary back flips every 2 minutes and suddenly he raids the fruit bowl for every piece of fruit he can find. I even had a battle with him in the middle of the Co op today because I wouldnt let him eat the apples I had bought before I had paid for them! Its bizzarre. He eats pears, apples, bananas, cherry tomato, but draws the line at strawberries or blue berrys. He even wears a pair of yellow goggles on his head(they were out of a play tool set he got for christmas) because Sporticus wears goggles. For his own safety I have had to stop him from leaping of the sofa and trying to do the splits which he tries to do on a daily basis(poor Ds3 is in babywalker and usually scrabbling for safety) But all in all I really cant fault Lazytown, he would constantly nag for chocolate or sweets until Sporticus came along so I am fairly chuffed its changed his attitude towards fruit. He still eats other foods but is happy to snack on fruit rather than junk through the day.

Dd daughter ate only fruit and veg for 2 days. However, she saw the advert for Pomebears and the spell was broken.
