Anxious starting school

Anyone else have a four year old starting school this September and feeling anxious about it. Keep feeling dread as soon as anyone mentions it and worried how DC will cope! DC turned 4 over the summer so will be one of the youngest and just feel worried how DC will cope in a big school environment. DC has been attending daycare since 1 and just left preschool who advised they are ready but starting to wish I had deferred him starting. I know this would be probably more for myself as I'll miss his! Any other mums feeling very anxious about their DCs starting school? Is this normal?

Its totally normal! I was dreading it for months before over thinking every little thing that he might not cope with or hed be to shy to ask. But hes done his first year and loved every second, it amazes me that he goes up at lunch to collect his food and tell the lunch ladies what he wants all on his own. I think because were with them all the time to support them and we jump in when we probably dont need to.

The reception teachers give them so much support aswell. I kept getting so upset about how much id miss him aswell and even looked into home schooling but those 6 hours fly by! And watching him learn so much and make friends and gain so much confidence is worth it.

Its such a big milestone and those 4/5 years just go so fast.

I feel exactly the same , my son starts in September too. Hes only ever done a few half days a week at nursery so will be a big change for him. I worry too about him putting off going to the toilet , the school day being too long etc. I'm sure this time next year it will be a worry of the past.

Felt exactly the same this time last year, so much so that we decided to delay our summer born child’s reception start to this year. He just wasn’t ready at just 4. This year he’s a totally different child, and is now excited! Just turned 4 is far too young isn’t it / we are one of the only countries in the world who start kids so young.

My son as not ready and he’s a January born. Loads of them aren’t ready. School expect that! Your anxiety is normal. Mention to the teacher what he can/can’t cope with. And plan for very irritable over tired kids, don’t plan too much excitement for a few weeks

He's so excited to start on Friday it's me dreading it. I think he's probably ready at this stage, he had his last day in private daycare and he looks so big compared to the year below couldn't imagine him staying on another year and I know he'd hate it as he says it's boring now. I'm actually feeling a lot better, in a WhatsApp group with the other class mums and they all feel the same way. My DS has really gotten into alphablocks and keeps sounding out words from books to me so I think he's ready to be challenged and I know the school will be supporting him

Of course they will and glad you’ve been reassured by the other class mums.

lots of kids are only just only sounding out phonics by reception and plenty more won’t have even started yet. The school will be expecting a spectrum in terms of ability and all kids have different strengths and interests.

goos luck!!! Sounds like he will have a blast
