Owlet sock experience - anxious mum

Anyone got experience of the owlet sock? My baby keeps sleeping face down on his front, he has started doing it now he has moved into his own room in his big cot. Its making me so anxious as at times his face is almost face down.

Did the owlet give false alarms? Did it help your peace of mind?

We used the Owlet for the first year with my now 18 month old. I had no issues with it whatsoever- absolutely brilliant!

QueenOfWeeds · 09/08/2023 18:35

We have had a couple of placement alerts (the lullaby sound) and one red false alarm when she was very tiny and having a night feed, but I read that actually their heart rate can really slow when feeding in the early days, so possibly it was genuine (but not actually a problem, if that makes sense?). We’ve been using it for six months now and I feel really reassured by it.

TropicalTrama · 09/08/2023 18:39

We had one because DH can be a bit anxious and not a single false alarm. It makes a different noise if it comes loose to the actual alert- it’s an amber light and a tinkly song that isn’t at all panic inducing.

I used it from birth with my youngest and had no false alarms - only a genuine one. It really helped with peace of mind.

How old is your baby OP?

calorcalorcalor · 09/08/2023 20:08

We have used one for 6 months and no problems whatsoever, it has really given us peace of mind.

Did you guys go for the owlet or owlet plus? The plus goes up to 5 years

We have the Owlet Plus, it gives us so much reassurance, especially since 10 m DS moved to his own room, as soon as he got in his cot from his much smaller NexttoMe, he was straight on his tummy to sleep 🫣 the Cubo camera and the Owlet have given us so much peace of mind on our first time parent journey. Thoroughly recommend them both.

Smurf123 · 09/08/2023 21:13

I've used the owlet for 2 years and I've just bought the plus sock to keep using it. It gives me reassurance

Giraffe1123 · 09/08/2023 21:20

I've been using it for 6 months now. Only had a few false alarms where the sock wasn't on properly. But other than that it's been really accurate. I've also found it helpful when DS was ill for extra reassurance that his stats were normal.

TropicalTrama · 09/08/2023 21:40

The owlet only. Plus wasn’t an option I don’t think but I find going up to 5 years really weird tbh. SIDS is a genuine concern but there’s absolutely no reason for a healthy 4YO to have a breathing monitor, or indeed any form of baby monitor. We stopped using it somewhere around 8/9 months I think - can’t remember exactly but it was definitely before 1.

Is it worth speaking to someone about your anxiety OP? If he's in his own room presumably he's over 6 months? It's perfectly safe for them to sleep on their fronts if they're rolling themselves there? Might be worth asking someone for some support?

Gigi89x · 09/08/2023 22:29

@SErunner thank you, i dont think my anxiety is bad enough to need help. But i would if i felt it got worse. DS is 6 months, whats worrying me is he gets his arms caught at times when rolling & his face is almost face down with a slight tilt to the side

This. I just had a baby listening monitor when mine were little, where the lights flashed when they cried. In their own room once they outgrew their moses basket, so between 4 -6 months. So much money to be made from anxious parents.

Totally normal to be anxious when you’re a parent to a small baby! Trying to insinuate the OP, and indeed, posters who advocate the use of the Owlet have psychological issues is ridiculous 🙄 the Lullaby Trust strongly advise against putting babies younger than 6 months in their own rooms, so I think I’ll disregard your prehistoric opinion.

You sound totally fine to me, it’s very normal to feel anxiety when your baby first sleeps on its tummy, especially when he’s not quite mastered rolling to his back. We have it drummed into us that our babies mustn’t tummy sleep, and when they are inclined to sleep in that position, it’s quite nerve wracking initially. They soon master rolling from one position to another. My son is a total tummy sleeper now, he’s rarely on his back. He also loves the ‘all fours bottom up’ position too 😊

toddlermum27 · 09/08/2023 23:11

Gave us false alarms and definitely fed into my anxiety - we didn't use it with our second

PrincessTigger · 09/08/2023 23:20

I didn’t find it very helpful. I used it when DS was a newborn and so of course he was sleeping most of the day, so the sock was charging through half his sleeps and then it was a faff getting it on each time. Especially as his feet were so small. I ended up using the electronic pads that go under the cot mattress that measure movement.

Careerdilemma · 09/08/2023 23:20

Loved ours. I carried on using it up until about 2. I bought the extension pack but have only used it since then when he's been really poorly.

cupcakesandt · 09/08/2023 23:26

I used the snuza hero breathing monitor on both my children. You attach it to the nappy. We never had any false alarms.

SErunner · 10/08/2023 06:56

Glad you're feeling okay OP. Post natal anxiety is really common and I think it's important to consider what is in the realms of 'normal' and what is becoming excessive and affecting your life negatively, so I'm relieved you didn't taken offence to my post (thank you). It sounds like you've got a good measure on this, I just worry some of these gadgets etc (of which the effectiveness is pretty dubious) help women mask an underlying problem that might be better off addressed. Take care of yourself x
