Switching from EBF to cows milk / formula

Dd will be 11 months when she starts nursery so I’ll only be able to bF her at night from that point (although I do want to wean her off this too soon after one).

DD is intolerant to both cows milk and formula. What are my options for month 11 assuming she doesn’t grow out of it?

I assume I can’t try cows milk substitutes (are there any?) until she is over one, so do I really need to get a gp prescribed formula for just one month?! (This is what hv advised me today).

I am calling the gp tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any wisdom in the meantime.

Pumping for feeds is not an option.

I wonder if the soya or oat milk that Alpro makes for age 1+ would be ok if you were still going to be breastfeeding too. It might be more palatable than the prescription dairy free formula would be.

Thank you I will ask the gp. It seems silly switching to formula for one month. To be honest she doesn’t drink much milk when she is away from me anyway (not that I am away much at the moment but the odd half a day or so) and then tops up with a huge feed when I am back!

Does she eat well? No experience of prescription formula but my understanding is it tastes very different and breastfed babies often won't take it. Especially at 11 months.

When you say you can only feed at night do you mean bedtime/ overnight? How many days/what hours will you be working?

Yes she eats well!! Hoover.

I’ll be working three days and yes feeding at night - maybe one feed pre work - but I do want to wean off ideally soon after one (want my cycles to come Back!!….).

is milk intake not such a big deal after one then?

I stopped breastfeeding at 1. At 11 months, I was just doing morning and bedtime really with perhaps a third feed in the daytime. Mine was also an excellent eater. I've not done routine milk feeds with either of mine beyond 1. Just offered with meals etc. Usually has a cup before bed but not always and has milk with cereal etc. I certainly wouldn't introduce formula at 11 months if you're still happy to breastfeed around work and plan to wean soon anyway.

Thank you. Just read the nhs guidance and it does seem calcium after one is ok to be provided in milk form or via yogurts cheese or milk alternatives so I see what you mean. When they’re small milk is obviously their main source of calories and nutrition so I think I still had that in my head.
