Lactose free formula

Hellooo, anyone elses babies on lactose free formula? We've been prescribed SMA Lactose free due to my little one (hes 10 weeks old) has had trouble with his bowels. His poos are like water, the smell was horrendous. He also pooed near enough after every feed. He also has eczema flare ups.

We were so used to using premade cow and gate bottles for the night feeds and when out and about. Just wondering how you managed preparing feeds for the nights and going out when a kettle isnt in sight 😅

We used a prefect prep at home and took hot water and premeasured cold water out with us to do a home made pre machine.

BUT, when we finally saw the paediatric dietitian she was very unimpressed with GP. She said lactose intolerance is incredibly rare in babies and tends to only occur when a parent also has it. She immediately changed her over to dairy free and it was likely having a different child.

I have thought for weeks it was cmpa. I've been to the doctors countless times and have been fobbed off with countless creams for his eczema. I repeatedly told them about his poop nappies and they didn't really listen. I have seen lactose intolerance is rare in babies so I'm a bit on the fence with it. Hes generally a happy smiley baby, but the poo was certainly not normal and his skin can get really dry and has flare ups. Fingers crossed this helps the symptoms improve 😭

Not on lactose free but the nuby rapid cool is handy for on the go. Pre measured formula, a flask of hot water, then add it to the nuby and shake. It'll cool down in a minute. Only thing is, is that it needs a 4hr cool-down period.

My baby has cmpa and we found the Nuby rapid cool flasks really helpful when making bottles out and about.

My little girl had a CMPA, is your GP sure it’s lactose? It’s very very rare for a baby that young to be lactose intolerant! Try and get switched to Pepti 1 if you think it might actually be CMPA, you can make this up like a normal bottle and use the prep machine.

Hi looking advice. My dd is 3months old and has been prescribed omeprazole for reflux and acid ,she's been on it now for a few weeks, her nappys have been watery and mucusy for quite awhile even before the omeprazole. After a recent visit with her health visitor she suggested a lactose intolerance and said about trying different formula. She was on sma pro so I changed her to sma lactose free, but ever since she's been spewing even more. We are only on day 3 of the new formula. Just wondering should I persist with this formula?

You need to start a new threat. But no, babies very rarely are lactose intolerant. You need to make a GP appointment and ask for formula which is free from dairy protein.

Hello,

I just wanted to post some feedback on my experience with my sons tummy issues and our journey using different formals.

We initially had him on kendamil and he was very constipated only having a bowel movement every 5 days. When he did it was watery and green. He visibly seemed in discomfort.

We did some research and tried him on Aptamil Comfort for Colic and Constipation (at around 7 weeks), he was having a bowel movement every 2/3 days but still seemed uncomfortable drawing his legs up and generally fussy and unsettled.

We then decided to go for Aptamil Lactose free as the slight improvement on reduced lactose (comfort formula) made us think the lactose was the issue. We spoke to the GP about this and they advised sometimes baby's digestive systems struggle to process the lactose, it doesn't mean they will be lactose intolerant their whole lives, just that they need to build up some resistance and ability to process it. On the lactose free formula he has a bowel movement daily although it was still green but better consistency.

After around 2 months on the lactose free formula we went back to comfort in the hope his digestive system had matured enough but he had the same problems as before (infrequent bowel movements, green, discomfort). We did some research on other formulas as we wanted to avoid creating a long term lactose intolerance by not introducing him to lactose. We went with HIPP as the ingredients list has lactose much rustler down (ie its not the main ingredient) compared with others (cow and gate, SMA). He has been doing really well, bowel movements have been a normal colour for the first time, he seems more comfortable and passes wind without issue and pain. Bowel movements range from daily to every 3 days but they are a better consistency when they do pass. He is now 4 months and I think we are out of the woods at last.

I hope this helps other mums confused and feeling concerned or worried. If you do go for lactose free milk just to give their tummy a little break and time to mature it won't be forever and HIPP organic seems to be a good formals for tummies sensitive to lactose.

All the best,

Susan
