Hi, we are in need of some advice please. We have tried several health visitors and GP's. All have different opinions and advice. It's conflicting and confusing.
Our daughter is 8 weeks old and she is having explosive yellow runny soup like mucousy poos. Several per day. Often during or just after a feed. From early on she has struggled with reflux, screaming in pain between feeds, congested, struggles to breathe during feeding, arches her back whilst feeding, throws her head back, wriggles around thrashing, coughing, gagging, gulping, sneezing, sicks up but usually following a burp, sometimes this is a lot, but not always. She brings up quite a bit with reflux so we cannot lay her down for a while after feeding. During feeding she regularly soaks her muslin where she loses so much milk from the corners of her mouth, often squirting out, frothy etc. She gets hiccups usually 30mins after every feed. We have tried pace feeding, taking breaks during feeding etc. She has slow flow teats and anti colic bottles. We swirl the milk rather than shake. GP's have given gaviscon for reflux, but health visitors say there's no evidence that it works and I hate giving medication unless it's necessary. She was treated for tongue tie a couple of weeks ago. She's still 'clicking' when feeding and gets tired after usually 2oz. Although she will regularly take 3-4oz now. She is feeding every 2-3 hours / on demand. Weight gain is fine. Healthy in every other way.
We have tried Aptamil and Aptamil Lactose free as advised by GP. Her poo changed to dark green and very eggy smelling poo/wind on the lactose free. Health visitor said try a completely different brand of normal milk so we tried Kendamil and her reaction has been the same as on normal Aptamil. We are back to yellow soup like poos.
We have researched and there is conflicting information online and with GP's and HV's regarding these symptoms. Some say it's normal, some say it's an allergy, some say it's lactose, some say lactose intollerance is rare and it's more likely to be CMPA. Some say it's not CMPA because she doesn't have a rash, but I have also read that a rash doesn't always apply and there are lots of variations of symptoms which can still be a CMPA.
GP today has said try another brand of milk such as Cow and Gate. But equally he said that her poos are normal. We want the best for her, but equally we are concerned by continuously swapping formulas and how this is going to impact her digestive system.
Is she reacting normally to standard formula. How do we know if she has a lactose intollerance. Lactose free still contains cow's milk so if she has a CMPA then how would we know this. GP's are reluctant to test her. We noticed on the lactose free that she developed some baby acne on one side of her face. Swapping back to Kendamil this has mostly cleared.
We are so confused and lost and would appreciate any advice. Thank you
