13 month old never slept through the night

Ds is 13 months, he has been waking up once in the night for the last 6 month, before that it was twice.

All i hear from other mums is their baby has slept through from 4 month's onwards!

Why is ours different? What are we not doing?

Any tips?

Every one I know had a miserable time at 4 months with sleep regressions! The mums you're talking to either have unicorn kids or go hard on the sleep training.
They get there in the end, around 2 we finally got sleeping through - though teething, jet lag, illness can throw it off. You will sleep again!

Frankcat19 · 01/08/2023 22:47

None of my three slept through the night until 17months and they were awake every few hours. Something suddenly clicked. I know it seems a long time but it really won't be forever.

TomatoSandwiches · 01/08/2023 22:51

My eldest didn't sleep through until 4.
My middle slept through from 6 weeks.
My youngest is 7 and sleeps in 2hr windows.

They are all different, they will not all respond in the same way to each effort you make.
Try not to get stressed put if things don't work out how you thought, most children do end up sleeping through at some point, hold on to that.

Have a look at this picture. My first slept through at 2.5. My second from one.

Mine didn't sleep through regularly until 18 months. It's normal and all kids are different. I found Little Ones useful for gentle sleeping tips.

inomniaparatis · 02/08/2023 05:32

Mine is 13 months too and wakes at least three-four times every night. It's hard but very normal!

SamanthaVimes · 02/08/2023 06:56

Only one wake at that age sounds great to me so I guess it depends where your expectations are!
My 12 month old was up 4 times last night, although that was particularly bad, average is probably twice.
There’s a lot going on developmentally around this age that interferes with sleep but they all sort themselves out in the end.

I think lots of people don’t say that their child still wakes up because they’re worried about being judged for doing something wrong 🤷‍♀️

BritInAus · 02/08/2023 07:16

Mine is 7 years old and has slept through the night 4 times ever in her life...
Didn't go longer than 2-3 hour stints until she was over 2.5 years old (sorry).
Not every baby sleeps the whole night from that young.

firestarter2023 · 02/08/2023 07:25

Mine didn't. She's 3 now and we are always so grateful that she sleeps through now! The early years are rough, gotta be patient. Flowers

TropicalTrama · 02/08/2023 07:39

Have you tried sleep training? Because if not then that’s your answer to ‘what are we not doing’. Of course you don’t have to do it but that’s how many many people get their baby sleeping through be it through gentle or cry based methods. If you’re just waiting for baby to do it on their own then that’s fine obviously but you’re likely going to be waiting into the toddler years.

gawditswindy · 02/08/2023 07:42

Mine was like that. She didn't sleep for longer than a 2 hour stretch for 10 months. But 13/14 months was when we saw the beginnings of an improvement. May have been because she went to nursery when she was 13 months.

BettyfromBristol · 02/08/2023 07:43

They are all different and I think it is luck which sort of child you get. One of mine slept through most nights from 4 months. The other did not get to that point until secondary school.

Pastaf0rbreakfast · 02/08/2023 07:46

Mine is 2 next month and we’ve had 4-5 nights where he has slept 10ish hours within the last few weeks. Prior to this our longest stretch was 4-6 hours. The 2-3 hourly wakes eased off about 15months I think.

Merrz · 02/08/2023 09:10

My DD is almost 5 and has only a handful of times slept the whole night. DD2 is almost 2 and still wakens at least twice a night, I think it's very normal.

4 months can be horrible.

my DC1 slept at least 6 hours practically from the off, with a few exceptions for teething and illness. my DC2 slept through the night consistently after starting primary school - in Germany that is at 6. Up till then? 3-4 times a week she'd come shouting into our room. It took a long time to get her to not do that unless she was sick.
Nearly 30 now and still doesn't sleep through the night with any regularity...

Sorry, OP. They're all different.

JoeyRamoney · 02/08/2023 11:12

4 months is tough!

Its ridiculous that parents are made to worry and feel like their baby should magically sleep through the night - never waking because of the temp, a nappy, thirsty, hungry or maybe just woke up and needs a cuddle.

Its hard, its really hard when you are tired. Its also so completely and totally normal. My DD didnt sleep through the night until she was almost 3 and even then a few nights a week she wakes and needs some reassurance back to sleep. Thats just her personality. Her Dad is a crap sleeper too so genetics probably play a part.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 02/08/2023 11:31

Neither of mine were great sleepers - partly my fault for DC1, but DC2 I was much more clued up (and less liable to stick my tit in her mouth to make sure grumpy DH didn't wake up) and she was still not great, she'd start sleeping through but then the slightest thing would wake her up.

Needless to say, they both grew out of it. And we all survived.

freesiasandpeonies · 02/08/2023 11:39

My first slept through at around 10 months, the second around 15 months. Both hopeless sleepers/nappers as tiny babies - we never had the sleeping for 18 hours a day newborn thing.

What really made the difference for us as time went on was being diligent about naps - though it’s a tricky time when they move from one to two - and early bedtimes, ideally 7pm, earlier if they’d had disrupted sleep the night before or missed naps.

Also they had dummies for naps and sleeping and I’d put a handful in the cot at night so if they woke up, they’d grab one and go back to sleep.

midnightreign · 02/08/2023 12:03

Please don't stress, every baby is different.
My eldest is 6 and has only slept through the night a handful of times - we never got the lovely sleepy newborn stage with her. My youngest is 5 months and sleeps through until 4am, has a feed then sleeps for another 2-3 hours so very different from my 1st.

Everyone always seems to shout about how great their baby is at sleeping, no one really shares the rough times and if their baby doesn't sleep so don't let it make you feel bad or as though you're not doing something xx

Olika · 02/08/2023 12:27

Sounds normal to me. My daughter is now 15.5m and she has naturally stopped needing night feeding and started sleeping much better during last one month.I make sure her wake window is long enough after the nap so she is tired enough for night sleep and also that she eats enough during the day so she doesn't get hungry at night.

ReeseWitherfork · 02/08/2023 12:30

DS was 21ish months when he slept through. Was waking three times a night, dropped one wake around 19 months, second at 20 months and then the third. I didn’t change anything, no “sleep training” or whatever.

DT are 16 months and still wake multiple times. And they’re both great at falling asleep independently (they have to be, can’t rock both of them to sleep).

You're not doing anything wrong.

persyate · 02/08/2023 14:14

Id say it sounds normal. My Dd was around 20 months when she started sleeping through. Up until then she was waking once for a feed. Once I stopped the feed she started sleeping through.

LSSG · 02/08/2023 20:29

DS is 16 months and I'd LOVE it if he only woke up once in the night! It's been multiple times most nights since he was born. Had to do gentle sleep training to get him to sleep at all really, he was up all hours and we were going spare! He's much better now but still up regularly at night, usually multiple times. He's slept through twice!

Isthisexpected · 02/08/2023 20:30

I should clarify when I say sleep through the night I mean a five hour stint!

tulipsunday · 02/08/2023 20:30

Mine started sleeping through when we dropped the milk feed does yours still have milk in the night @pielyy if so that might help x
