Fees for rainbows/brownies

My daughter goes to rainbows which costs us £15 per month - including through summer. They broke up for summer in mid June until the start of September. Just trying to get a sense of these fees/subs are in line with elsewhere and if others pay monthly too. Thanks!

£2 per week plus the annual subscription fee in Jan/Feb.

Hi

My brownies pay £37 per term plus £10 for our hall, this includes the census fee plus any trips e.g. cinema, bowling etc. It's hard to generalize as we don't pay rent as the hall belongs to us but we have to cover all the utilities, insurance, council tax etc across 3 groups. Your Rainbow group may have a high hall rental. Our local Scout group charges £20 a month including August.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 31/07/2023 22:01

Scouts for us but it’s been £10 a month all year round until recently when it went up to £12.50 a month.

They still have costs with upkeep of the hall, insurance, registration fees etc so I prefer it to be spread evenly over 12 months

I pay £35 a term for one Scout fees and £35 per quarter for the others Scout fees (my DDs attend different Scout troops) (£105 per year and £140 per year)

DHs scouts pay £15 per month. (£180 per year)

The main costs are annual capitation fees which go to HQ and property costs... even rent or tax/utilities.

underneaththeash · 31/07/2023 22:18

Ours are £45/term. They've just split it up into monthly payments to make it more affordable.

Jayjay1985 · 31/07/2023 22:36

Thanks so much, I hadn’t really considered what their costs would be. It’s held in a church hall so I don’t imagine it’s particularly expensive?

We’re £5 per week term time.

Our church hall is £25 per session, paid upfront for the year in April.

purpleme12 · 31/07/2023 22:39

£40 per term for brownies

ImGonnaHaveToTurnMyBackOnYou · 31/07/2023 22:42

Depending on the location of the church hall, it could be cheap or free, it could be really expensive.

I can't comment on scouts, I've only been involved with units which have rented.

£15 is really good.

We worked our termly subs out so that the January yearly subscription was accounted for. And even with our nominal rent, we had to charge at least £30 a term.

Some places work it out really cheap but then charge you for each badge (£1 ish a badge usually, at the shop) and some charge the subscription in January- but that's around £50 a person (leaders and helpers included!)

Hall fees, insurance, central subscription. Training for the leaders. Resources and fees for the activities. It all adds up. They are not for profit so the fees are set to cover their costs and keep enough in the bank for emergencies and unexpected costs.

They should keep accounts and there will likely be an annual meeting where you can see what they're raising and spending. But £180 a year doesn't go far!

Things that come out of pack fees:
Annual capitation
Rent
Badges
Resources ( printed and actual materials)
Training (all leaders and regular helpers need first aid etc).

Outings
The more the pack does the more it costs for resources and badges etc.
Rent and running costs/storage costs vary hugely from pack to pack.
Each unit has to produce annual accounts and they aren't allowed to carry a huge surplus so what is charged must be spent.

Churches have to cover their heating and lighting etc. too, and perhaps a caretaker and cleaner. Our WI rents rooms from two local churches, they've both had to put the hire charge up considerably to cover the COL increases.
Yes scouting leaders are voluntary, but there are costs to pay to central scouting, insurance etc. Of all the activities our DC did scouting was by far the cheapest.

CompaniesHouse · 31/07/2023 22:45

We pay termly. Can’t remember exactly how much but it works out about £100 a year I think (rainbows). I haven’t really thought about it in any great depth but it seems cheap for an hour’s club with at least two adults supervising plus materials for their activities etc. I don’t want to make assumptions but I really hope you’re not feeling pissed off you’re paying over the summer? As PP said, it’s probably a yearly fee split over 12 months to make it even and I reckon no one is profiteering off Rainbows even if they weren’t. They rely on a lot of volunteers and goodwill as far as I can tell (at least round my way they do!).

Fab thanks, we’re paying £15 a month for 12 months so £180 for the year which I guess is a bit more than £30 per term. We’ve never been asked for the yearly subscription so I guess that’s included so maybe what we’re paying is about right

No not at all, my daughter loves rainbows and it’s definitely cheap compared to some of her other clubs. And I totally understand twas just sparked by a conversation earlier with other mums and one of them had a friend nearby who was paying significantly less than us so

£20 a term for Brownies. Plus £20 once a year registration fee.

Scouts is £12 a month I think.

TheaBrandt · 31/07/2023 22:51

You know they run by volunteers- people giving up their time for free right? so seems pretty awful to be nit picking about what you pay. I hope you havent voiced this to anyone in real life.

Jayjay1985 · 31/07/2023 22:51

Sorry sent too soon. Totally get that they are volunteers giving up their own time so definitely not grudging it. Was just surprised how varied the fees and payment structure seemed across units local to us and just wondered really

OP posts:
Carsarelife · 31/07/2023 22:51

Ours is £25 per month term time so no payment required in August

sunshineandrain82 · 31/07/2023 22:55

Brownies £32 a term. I think our census is £10 a time and we have it twice a year 🤔

Plus cost of trips etc. but usually no more then £20 and maybe every other term.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 31/07/2023 22:56

Rainbows - £30 per term

I’m well aware they are volunteers thanks, I’m not complaining at all. I’m only asking the question because it came up in conversation earlier and I started wondering about it.

£35 a term.

entitledparents · 31/07/2023 23:13

All packs run on non profit basis. So what you pay is their running costs.

confusedlots · 31/07/2023 23:15

I think ours is £60 for the year
