Gagging v choking

I’m really struggling to know the difference. My dd keeps what I would say is choking - it’s silent, tongue out. But I also read choking is quite rare. Can gagging ever be quiet? (Everything I’ve seen says gagging is loud).

generally food comes out her mouth quite easily?, ie I haven’t had to put her across my knee and do the five slaps.

if it is choking why would dd be doing it so often?!

she is eight months and doing a mix of purée and blw. The gagging/choking is on the blw bits.

super super super stressed out by it :(

How is DD while this is happening? Does she seem in any distress or is she just trying to work the food around her mouth?

Thank you for replying. She doesn’t seem stressed really and she doesn’t look at me (I did read they look at you scared when choking).

If it's mainly with the solid food it's most likely gagging. It's a natural, normal and healthy reflex as they learn the boundaries of their mouth. I know despite that it can still be distressing to see!) I think if she was choking you wouldn't have questioned it.

Search on the Solid Starts website, or Instagram highlights for their videos and information on gagging vs. choking. They are an absolutely brilliant resource.

Advice given by PP is great. Choking is very different from gagging, firm believer that all parents should do a paediatric first aid course, knowing you have the skills to deal with any accidents etc makes life as a parent a lot less stressful.
