Changing formula aptamil to kendalmil

Hi we changed our baby’s formula from Aptamil to kendalmil today and he has been crying and screaming pretty much non stop since the switch. He’s 3.5 months old. We did it one go rather than slowly introducing the new formula. Is this reaction normal? I’m not sure how long to carry on with it for. My plan was to give it a week to see if he settles with it, but I’m not sure if that’s too long now?

We are trying the switch because he was really unsettled and had digestive problems on Aptamil and we heard good things about kendalmil.

Our little one is the same age as yours and we switched from SMA to aptamil a week ago with no issue. Little one was refusing to drink SMA but downed the aptamil so I think it was a taste issue for us. However, a couple of Mums I know did have this issue switching from other brands to kendamil. They feel it was perhaps because kendamil is very rich and creamy and was perhaps too much of a shock for their tummies?

Kendamil is great, but it is very different to other formulas. Very creamy.

I would go back to normal and switch gradually, swapping out one more scoop everyday.

Personally I'd avoid it like the plague if your LO is showing reflux type symptoms.

There are so many threads on here where babies have a reaction to Aptamil and especially to Kendamil.

I'd swap to another brand altogether but not Cow & Gate as it's made in the sane factory as Aptamil.

If another milk doesn't suit, then I'd look into the possibility of Cow's Milk Protein Allergy.

Mine gets on really well with Kendamil but every baby is different. Could you try alternating bottles see if that helps? All baby milks are essentially the same - I think Kendamil has no palm oil which I've read somewhere (can't remember where - baby brain) is unusual for formula milk. Hope it works out x

thanks everyone. We took him off Kendalmil yesterday evening and back to Aptamil. He was instantly better, minimal crying/fussing and he slept through from about 1 am until 8 am (maybe because he was so tired from all the crying during the day!).

however, this evening about an hour and a half after his last feed he woke up from his nap crying, and then very quickly started high-pitched screaming, going red in the face, screaming so much his voice stopped making a sound, and bringing his knees to his chest. This went on continuously for about an hour. He’s been doing this for a few hours most evenings over the past couple of weeks, which is why we thought about changing formula. Does this sound normal for 3 1/2 month old?! I’m thinking about slowly reintroducing Kendalmil but I’m not sure if it’s going to help

Again, if he's having problems I'd avoid Aptamil and Kendamil did the the number of threads where babies have really struggled on these two formulas. If you are going to swap, maybe try something like Hipp Organic?

Just wondering if you use a perfect prep as some babies struggle with the bubbles it creates in the bottles?

Sxp842 · 30/07/2023 22:24

Thanks I’ll look into Hipp organic.

oh yes we actually are using a perfect prep, and I was wondering if the bubbles were too much. I had been making formula in dr brown forumla pitcher as it was good for reducing bubbles. I would store it in the fridge and give it cold which he seemed to be ok with, but then we read something that said cold milk can make babies digestive problems worse so we stopped doing that and used the perfect prep. I might go back to the dr brown formula pitcher and just find a way to quickly warm up the milk

If you do stop using the perfect prep and swap to Hipp Organic and she's she's still having problems, you might be looking at Cow's Milk Protein Allergy.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 31/07/2023 20:20

How've you got on today @Sxp842?

Sxp842 · 02/08/2023 11:26

so I think his crying has got better, night before last he had an hour of screaming and going red in the face but yesterday he was apparently fine and did his first poo in 4 days. However his sleep is now off, he has been sleeping through the night for the past few weeks but the past two nights he has been unsettled all night and waking up for feeds. Not sure if that’s to do with the milk though. Hasn’t helped that I’ve been away for a few days so husband and MIL have been looking after him. Now that I’m back I think I just need to spend a few days monitoring him properly before deciding whether to change milk again.

Have you tried putting a squirt of infacol in the bottles? That gets rid of the bubbles.
Poor you - sounds relentless x
