Newborn put my hand in his mouth - not long finished eating crisps

First off, I know I know I should have washed my hands but we’d had a bit of a pee incident on changing mat with our 17 day old and I had to take him off my other half quickly so they could deal with the mess on the floor.

Whole sitting newborn pulled my hand into their mouth for a second. I’d had some salt crisps about ten minutes prior and hadn’t had a chance to wash my hands.

I’d have wiped them on my dressing gown and there’s no crumbs or anything on them but should I be worried about sodium levels or anything that could still be on my skin getting into his system?

Feel I’m worrying about absolutely everything at this point, but can’t switch off about this.

He's fine, they don't absorb salt through their skin

AlligatorPsychopath · 27/07/2023 22:45

They will be absolutely fine. This is a nonevent. Please try and calm down.

FirstTimeNameChanger · 27/07/2023 22:45

Oh I misread. He is still fine though

I'm sure he will be completely fine! If you are worrying about a lot of things like this then it might be worth a call to your health visitor. Post partum anxiety is very common.

Hummusanddipdip · 27/07/2023 22:46

I get the fear, but honestly it's nothing to worry about. Just think in a short while when he's a bit more mobile he'll be putting allsorts in his mouth.

LaPerduta · 27/07/2023 22:47

It will be a minuscule amount of salt, don't worry.

Hairyfairy01 · 27/07/2023 22:47

He's fine. Perhaps a chat with your HV wouldn't go admiss?

continentallentil · 27/07/2023 22:47

He’ll be grand

Have a chat with your HV or GP nurse about anxiety though, it is best nipped in the bud and it sounds like you have a bit of PND

Yeah, I’m going to chat to them next time they’re here about anxiety as it’s a lot.

Echoing this, if you are worrying about something like this then have a chat with a health visitor or doctor about anxiety. It's very common and you can get some help, don't suffer all this worry in silence.

FionnulaTheCooler · 27/07/2023 22:51

He'll be fine but I get it. When DD was a similar age I wouldn't let DH hold her after eating some peanuts just in case she was allergic. There is no history of nut allergy in either of our families. Those protective hormones can make you react in extreme ways.

Midgewater · 27/07/2023 22:51

Seriously?

smilesup · 27/07/2023 22:53

Oh lovely this sounds like all the trademarks of being a wonderful parent.
You are worried about something that isn't something to be worried about. However at 3 weeks in it is very normal to be hyper alert to things to protect your baby. BUT it is also really important that you check in with health professionals and family to make sure you haven't tripped into being too worried about things as this can be a sign of Post natal depression.
Obviously you might not have this but worth being vigilant for you and your babies sake.

FrazzledFirefly · 27/07/2023 22:53

Ah, bless you OP. You sound a great parent.

Please relax, he'll be absolutely fine 🙂

Midgewater · 27/07/2023 22:51

Seriously?

Unnecessary.

Clumsykitten · 27/07/2023 23:02

Please chat to your GP. Lots of women experience anxiety at this time, a bit of support might be helpful.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/07/2023 23:08

That really wouldn't worry me. Your baby will be fine.

Nah, I think a swift reality check is just what OP was asking for and clearly needs.
