Thumb sucking (Thumbsies)

Has anyone successfully used Thumbsies to break a child's thumb sucking habit?

My daughter is 4 has sucked her thumb the past couple of years after seeing another child do it. My concern is her teeth are starting to move which is why I'm keen to put a stop to it asap. She also has sore red patches on her thumb knuckles.

I've tried ignoring it hoping it would resolve itself and I've tried gently removing her thumb when I notice it. I have also tried encouraging her to stop In the day as a start. Nothing works. Thumbsies get good online reviews but are pricey so keen to hear if others have had a positive experience.

Yes, worked a treat! I bought two but really only needed one

Thats great to hear @mrswishywashywoo I wondered if she may still suck them with the fabric on? Also my daughter sucks both thumbs so I'm thinking I'll need two?

Another yes from me, we'd tried everything and the thumbsie worked within days. Have also recommended them to a friend who had a good Worth every penny.

My daughter sucked her fingers rather than her thumbs. Let's hope yours doesn't move on to do that.

Off-topic, but thank you for this thread. It sent me off on a google trail that eventually resulted in me buying cuttable silicone toe protectors to try and break my nailbiting habit. Maybe I'll get on top of this problem at last.

(I was a thumbsucker in childhood too. Didn't stop till I was nine! It gave me such comfort. My teeth were fine, so although I respect any parents preference to help their children past this habit, try not to worry too much if it turns out to be hard.)

Yes! They worked brilliantly for us, my daughter was very proud of hers and stopped sucking in a few weeks.

@LouS84 that's great. What age was she when she stopped?

Another success story! I will caveat that DC does need to have a desire to want to stop as well for it to be successful though.

Mine sucked one thumb but would use the other if we blocked that one so we bought 3 or 4 (to account for the ones being washed). Be prepared for them to get really grubby too. Took one week of wearing them all the time and rest of the month wearing at night to kick the habit

I haven’t used thumbsies but used a brace called a nipit on my daughter that worked really well. She’s a finger sucker and would remove anything like a glove. This is quite pricey but worked right away. Just wanted to share if you’re looking for another option!

Could you share where you got the brace from? DD is 6 and a thumb sucker mainly when going to sleep, thumbsies didn’t work for us, she just took them off. She has a really old comforter toy and sucks her thumb at the same time and she gets very upset as she says she can’t sleep without them both. DH thinks we need to remove the comforter too to get her to stop but that just seems cruel.

we are desperate for more ideas here!

Sure here is the nipit website- https://www.nipit.com/. When I clicked to purchase it in the UK it took me to Amazon so you can search for it there too. It’s expensive but I did a lot of research and this seemed the most reliable. The first 5 mins after I put it on my daughter was upset but I explained it’s not a punishment, the dentist said she has to stop because it’s bad for her mouth and teeth, also big girls don’t suck etc. then she said I don’t want to suck anymore Mummy. And since then she’s happy to wear it! We’re meant to put in on for 2-3 weeks and then once they’ve completely stopped keep it on for 7 days just at night. Nearly done with week 2 now so looking forward to hopefully being finished soon!
