Day 2 toilet training. Is my DD ready?

Hi all.
My 2.11 year old is potty training last 2 days

1st day 3 in toilet and 5 accidents
2nd day 2 in toilet and 5 accidents

Sometimes she sits on the toilet and then pees 5 mins later
She comes and tells me she's wet and want to go to the toilet. Once she did this and carried on the pee on the toilet. I think she tried to hold the accident pee?

Taking her every 30 mins
She's likes going till it's evening and says no mummy toilet is yucky and wants to get off and has a accident
When she does she looks down at her pee and is super happy with herself
Lots of praise when she does and a treat.
I think she sometimes has trouble relaxing
Using a adult toilet with child seat and step up.
Is she ready yet? Shall I persevere?

Stop taking her to the toilet all the time. Stay at home near toilet/ potty (potty is easier) and keep her naked from the waist down so she doesn’t have to worry about removing clothes.

Toddler101 · 25/07/2023 19:48

Ditch the treat.

Naked from the waist down.

Praise any wee that makes it into toilet or potty. Bland unemotional response to accidents "whoops wee goes on the potty/toilet."

I'd start with potty then upgrade to using the toilet later down the line when potty mastered.

Good luck

@Soggysummer2023

Thanks I want to not take her all the time but I'm scared she will have more accidents lol
This summer also isn't that warm. I wanted her to be bare bottom half
Trying to also skip the potty phase too...

@Toddler101

Thanks for the tips.
Is using a potty better now? I wanted to skip it if I could. How does it make a difference?

Keep at it, first 4 days were hell with my DD accidents everywhere bless her and we put her on every 20 minutes or so and by day 5 we were away.
she actually got chicken pox and we regressed back to nappies but on the second attempt I always went with her (am pregnant with my second so not difficult to need the loo 😂) and I noticed she started to take herself off to the toilet and we switched to panties, no nappies at all during the day. - she liked being on a big toilet with the ladder as it makes her feel like a ‘big girl’ and that was the biggest sign she was ready to use a toilet - , I think before I was just lucky and timing it well. She will use both a potty or the big toilet and I always always take a potty with me when we are out and about. She still has the odd accident but they are really rare.

as long as your toddler is signalling and asking to go, then just keep at it and you will get there xx

peachgreen · 25/07/2023 20:25

I waited until she asked to do it. I think she was about 3.5. She had 1 accident and was dry day and night in 3 days.

eliayd · 25/07/2023 20:49

@E1066 thanks for your response. I will definitely try for a week and see if she gets it in that time. Thinking about getting a potty to make it easier too. We have a downstairs WC I have been using so far

@peachgreen that's awesome. I'm so tempted to wait a bit longer to make it easier but I will try now first

Definitely try a potty it's just easy to hand to grab quickly at the beginning once they get the hang you can try the toilet

Thinkbiglittleone · 25/07/2023 21:07

I think you are better starting her on a potty, it's a long way to hold a wee all the way to the loo for a little person.

Naked from the waist down, keep potty in the room, watch for queues of her needing a wee and get her to potty, once a few in their leave her to it, maybe suggesting she may go if you see her displaying her queues.
Give lots of praise and lots of encouragement.

@Topjoe19 @Thinkbiglittleone

Also any recommendations on types of potty? The really small ones or the ones shaped like a real toilet? X

@eliayd we originally bought the one with a little face on, looks like a proper little toilet I think it had a toilet roll holder on the side (I know the shameBlush) but he preferred just a bog standard open top potty.

I read the book oh crap it was amazing. Our DS was trained in a few days then trained at night a week or 2 later.

We then moved onto a step and a padded inner thingy for the toilet, but he is very petite and was trained at 22 months so he had to learn not to slip through it GrinGrin

eliayd · 25/07/2023 21:21

That's amazing it worked so well for you. What are the main takeaways for the oh crap method?

I waited until she asked to do it. I think she was about 3.5. She had 1 accident and was dry day and night in 3 days.

This is how I did it too, with all three of my children. It was straightforward and stress-free.

eliayd · 25/07/2023 21:24

@GrumpyOldCrone

Haha I'm so tempted to wait now

GrumpyOldCrone · 25/07/2023 21:27

Well I assume you have your reasons for wanting to try sooner, so obviously you should do whatever makes the most sense for you! My main priority was keeping my life as easy as possible, but of course it’s more buying/washing nappies the way I did it.

Thinkbiglittleone · 25/07/2023 21:38

From what I remember

Firstly start teaching your child to "push" their pants down by themselves (children don't click with "pull" them down, as that's not action we really use)

Clear your diary - completely.
The child stays naked at home
You do absolutely nothing but watch them, every child has a cue before they wee/poo, your job is to watch for it.
Once you have it, every time they display it put them on potty, lots of praise if anything comes out.
Then you start to simply encourage them to use the potty, not constant reminders or putting them on jt, that's not teaching them to recognise the feeling of needing a wee and associating it with going the potty. When you see the cue, "do you need the potty/wee" if they go massive praise, once a few are in the potty, stop the reminders.

Once they are 80% getting in the potty, then you take them out. They must try for a wee before you leave and they wear no underwear. The first outing is literally a few minutes around the block, when you get back in, you say for them to try for a wee. Don't leave until they have tried for a wee, it get them in the habit. Then your next outing is maybe the supermarket with a toilet in it, so you try for a wee before you leave then when you get to the supermarket - gets them in the habit and used to going to the toilet on different environments. Tell them to tell you if they feel they need a wee. Lots of praise and encouragement each time they try, and each journey that is accident free.

Once they are happily taking themselves and happy with pushing down their pants and can do it with loads of time left to still get their pants down and wee in the toilet, not in their pants while trying to get them down as they've left it too late, then they have underwear and trousers/shorts

This is a very brief, of what I can remember, sorry it's not more concise, but that was the jist.

I think i lined my car seat with a dogs puppy pad, luckily it wasn't necessary but just in case.

madeleine85 · 25/07/2023 21:43

We had 2 false starts trying potty training before it really worked on try 3. It is frustrating, and I've had the screw it, let's just do nappies a bit longer feeling plenty a time. We have a floor potty (ugly and annoying to constantly empty, but she uses it and likes it. I think it also really is easier for them to poop as it brings their knees up a little so gets them in position to make it easier. We have the stairs to the toilet, which she uses in the other bathroom, but would use the floor potty if given the choice. There are also the portable fold up toilet seats for public toilets if out and about which I really recommend getting one and keeping in the car.

Just use a normal potty and have it in the room wherever she is. Don't make a big deal but when she does a pee or a poo do a high five and congratulate her.
Mine were potty trained and dry through the night fairly easily by the time they were 2.2 months old. I don't know if I just got lucky or what it was but I never went through the rigmarole others mention. Mine aren't the brightest of bulbs either.

eliayd · 26/07/2023 16:37

@strongcupofTea thanks for the tip.
Today she asked for the toilet 3 x and did a pee in the toilet those times once
Is this progress?
She's still had 3 accidents though x

I would see it as progress that she felt she needed a wee, asked to go and then had a wee, yes that's progress, well done her.GrinGrin

eliayd · 28/07/2023 12:44

@Thinkbiglittleone

Yesterday
She had 4 potty successes and 2 accidents
Definitely progress
Asked 2 times and was successful

Today she's asked every time so far or just helps herself to the potty.
I went for the potty in the end and not big toilet.
It's definitely easier for her and me haha

No accidents so far. Fingers crossed. Hope it's clicking for her. Thanks for all your help x

@eliayd big well done to her !
Sounds like she is doing great, more in the potty than not is definitely a win and now asking as well, sounds brilliant.
