Giving gripe water — how do you do it?

Have had trouble winding DD at night ever since she was born, she’s 5 months now, and we’ve found that the only thing that will get a burp out of her at night is gripe water. However it’s such a mess to give her!

At the moment I’ve been pre-filling a calpol syringe with the gripe water then standing the syringe in an empty glass by the bed, ready to give her it after her night feed. This worked for a few nights but she’s got wise to it now, she clamps her mouth shut, if I can manage to get the syringe in, now matter how slowly I try to give her it a little bit at a time, she spits it out everywhere and makes a soggy mess. (Just done a night feed where her bib, muslin, and my pillow and side of the duvet ended up all sticky and covered in gripe water!)

Does anyone have any tips on how to give the gripe water that aren’t so messy? My other thought was an empty Colief syringe but I saw that the capacity for that is only 0.5ml, so I’d have to give her 10 droppers worth in the middle of the night 😅

Thanks in advance!

I might be wrong but I don't think you need to burp them anymore at that age? I think they can just burp if they need to burp?
So I just wouldn't bother at all. Sounds like it's stressful for both of you and no doubt waking her up so much in the night too!

@kjokise unfortunately she’s gets bad trapped wind and if she doesn’t burp after a night feed, she’s awake again an hour or so later in a lot of discomfort 😞 so does still need burping at night! X

Are you aiming the syringe towards the back of her cheek? That was the best for my son

and not the calpol syringe it’s too wide. A dentinox colic drops one was good as it’s rounded so easier to slip in the mouth- tbf those drops worked better than gripewater. You can put them in a bottle too.

I put it in a bottle test and my son just sucked it like it was milk. I just had to be really careful not to let him suck in air when the test was empty.

I used to put the syringe in DDs mouth and just let her chew/suck on it while squeezing small amounts in. Sometimes it would work if I was rocking her or distracting her somehow like being silly.

Can you look at ways to reduce the amount of air she is taking in during feeding?
