6 year old night time accidents

My 6 year old still wets the bed, is this still considered "normal"? I make sure she's used the toilet before bed but she is still wetting frequently. I posted on another group and was told it was normal, I have 3 other children and they were all fully dry day and night before they started school.

My 5 year old is the same, I have been told by GP that they don't consider it an issue until age 7. Some children just take a little longer for it to click.

Yes, it's still within the range of normal. If she's still doing it when shes 7 you can ask for a referral to the enuresis clinic.

It's often not so much 'clicking' which makes it sound like a behavioral issue as just that they're not yet producing the hormone which suppresses weeing at night. Another factor can be that if they don't drink enough in the day, their bladder capacity might be low. Check she's drinking plenty earlier in the day but not near bedtime.

Yeah I think it is still normal.

My friends little boy has just turned 7 and still wears pullups at night because he can't reliably stay dry. She is thinking about taking him for a referral but he is so sensitive about it and embarrassed. He was due a sleepover at my house and she had to cancel because he was too embarrassed and didn't want us to know.

He hasn't been delayed with anything, often has picked up things really quickly so she was really surprised.

Unless there's a specific SN, it's got absolutely nothing to do with their other abilities.

Later range of normal but still very much normal. There are things you can do to help like limiting drinks after dinner, no blackcurrant, lots of drinks during the day to increase bladder capacity, going to the loo twice before bed to check bladder is properly empty.

At 6.5 DD hadn't had a single dry night. I contacted the GP, got a referral to the continence clinic and she's now on medication and dry most nights. She's going to have a bladder scan in the clinic in the near future too

Thanks all I didn't realise it was considered normal as there was a thread on here once about a 4 year old in nappies and the comments were all saying how shocking it was that a 4 year old was still in night time nappies! Despite putting nappies on her (pull ups) they are leaking through! What do others use then as I'm struggling to find ones for her size, currently using dry notes
but they leak.

How weird, 4 is the average age to be dry at night so stands to reason some will be later, and from talking to other parents I’d say it was 50:50 at reception age and I’ve been given loads of pull ups recently for my youngest from parents of only children in DD’s Y1 class who are now dry at night but they still had most of a pack left so aged 5/6.

If the dry nites are flooding they’re probably too big, DC is drinking far too much in the evening, not emptying their bladder fully before bed or likely a combination of the above.

SashaRose · 22/07/2023 23:16

It’s in the range or normal and we had this with our eldest DC and when he was 6 we decided to try an alarm and chose therapee. It’s expensive but was so worth it as he was dry in two weeks.

It was getting him down as his brother was dry and age 2 and we knew we were getting nearer to beaver camp and sleepovers etc.

I guess the point I am making is that yes it’s normal but there are things out there to try, ERIC is a great resource

Ds was dry in the day before 3yo, but not reliable in the night until he was 7yo. He just didn't wake up when he needed a wee! Now he doesn't wee in the night at all and is totally reliable. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.
