Renal Pelvic Dilation

Hi there - looking for some advice/experience.

I’m 25 weeks pregnant, and at 20 week scan our anatomy scan picked up renal pelvic dilation in one of the baby’s kidneys. The fetal medicine consultant did a full review again, and was pretty relaxed about it and is reviewing baby by ultrasound every four weeks.

This is never something we’ve experienced (we have a son) but how did people manage, was there anything to worry about longer term for baby and how did people cope with the anxiety?

I am constantly researching and stressing and I still have quite a long road in. I’ve worked myself into a state where I’m convinced something more serious is going to be wrong and how did people manage any extra monitoring and the worry!

Thanks

Hi, what was the outcome with this? We were told at our 32 week scan today baby has 1 kidney dialated and are scanning again at 36 weeks.

My son is now a very healthy eighteen year.old who has never had a renal issue despite having this picked up at 20 week scan.
It was there again at 30 weeks and he was scanned six weeks after birth when it had resolved.

Hi there, we’ve had our little boy on 6 November. He is healthy but his hasn’t resolved and got worse throughout pregnancy. Even after birth it’s still dilated and he’s under consultant review and precautionary antibiotics as risk of infection. I was so so stressed about it, but just try and deal with what’s in front of me day to day and he’s well. He’s actually going in next week for a procedure to test for reflux and then two further scans. I think the more severe the dilation, the less likely it is to resolve on its own. But overall, ok. I did have to push to make sure it was considered as part of discharge, as often the peads and obs teams are disjointed on this. Good luck and please let me know if I can help any further.

My daughter had dilated kidney on ultrasounds and more detailed scans confirmed duplex kidney. After she was born she had more scans and tests and prophylactic antibiotics daily. She ended up becoming unwell due to an unusual complication with an ectopic ureter, she spent some time in hospital at about 8 weeks old and had recurrent UTIs until she was old enough for keyhole surgery to remove the kidney just after her 3rd birthday. Now 14 and never had a health problem since. Stressful at the time but the consultant was brilliant and her recovery was great.
