Help! Advice regarding exclusive pumping

recommendations for a really good pump for exclusively pumping?

So long story short. My 8 week old has had difficulty with her latch from the get go. She struggles on both breast and bottle. But has been thoroughly checked for tongue tie and we’ve been told it’s definitely not tied.

anyway because of her trouble on the breast, we’ve started using the bottle with expressed milk (she still struggles but nothing compared to bf)

however my supply has dropped so dramatically and I can’t really keep up with the pumping vs her needs. Can anyone recommend a good pump, I feel like mine is partly the reason I can’t keep up as it wasn’t a very expensive one (bellababy)

Thanks in advance

I used an ardo calypso this time and it was a really good pump, i had borrowed one from the hospital for a few weeks and then decided to buy one, I pumped properly from six months when I returned to work and had no issues with supply, but I had been fairly well established with feeding at that point, so may have been that. I do rate the pump though. Also the kellymom website is good for tips on increasing your supply

I rented a hospital grade one (Medela symphony) when I had to exclusively pump for.premature DS

Spectra S1/2 tends to be the most recommended in the pumping community. I had one and it was brilliant. The only difference is one has an internal battery so you can use it not plugged in.

I exclusively pumped from only one side and used a tommee tippee electric pump.

It was hard work keeping up with the supply. The way I managed was that every time I sat down to feed her I put the pump on too and did it during her feed so that I wasn't spending hours doing both.

I took the pump everywhere with me, even the beach 😂

I did help by massaging and squeezing my breast whilst pumping so it was more efficient.

Thank you everyone. I ordered the spectra s1 I felt it had the best reviews for exclusive pumping x

Hospital grade Medela is amazing!!!

also get a second(and possibly third!) opinion on the tongue and lip tie

Garman · 20/07/2023 20:52

Make sure you have the correct size flanges and that they fit you well.

Sprinklerainbows · 20/07/2023 21:52

@Hollyppp this my second opinion if I don’t get on with the spectra!

So I’ve had 2 opinions… I would defo like a third. She worries me slightly because she’s got quite a lazy suckle, dribbley etc. waiting on a paed referral for her very very small head circumference so I’m going to bring it up!

@Garman yes thank you, I read it come with only a 28mm flange which is pretty big for most people… on the hunt for a 24mm

@Sprinklerainbows I exclusively pumped for 6 months for the same issues and I used a Medela Freestyle Flex as it was quite portable. I also had a double Elvie so I could pump whilst out and no one would notice.

It's SO hard but I'm so glad I did it!

GCWorkNightmare · 20/07/2023 22:07

I did a year of it with a Medela Swing (over a decade ago.). Had good supply but only if I was well hydrated, ate foods like oats and pumped 3 hourly regardless of what else was going on. Had to maintain that even when DD fed less frequently.

Watch out for blocked milk ducts - they’re a b@st@rd.

You can buy flanges online or in some pharmacies. Who checked her for tongue tie so far?
