6mo getting leg stuck in cot bars

No matter where she starts out in the cot my 6 month old DD turns in her stomach and shifts herself until she’s sideways in the cot and puts one leg through the bars. She then cries when she wakes up as her leg is stuck.

Any ideas how I can stop this happening. I’m getting a bit worried she’s really going to hurt herself (my sister broke her leg as a baby getting it stuck in the cot). She wears a sleeping bag and I always place her on her back to sleep. Cot bumpers seem the obvious answer but I’m reluctant to use them as they’re not recommended by the Lullaby Trust.

My 9 months old keeps doing this too. I don't think there's much we can do other than moving them when noticing it !
Dd is a front sleeper too, and she ends up all over the cot !

Can she roll and lift her head? Is she trying to turn in her sleep to sleep on her tummy? I’d put her down on her front at this age.

Put a cot bumper on the OUTSIDE of the cot bars? Baby can't squish their face against them then, so risk is reduced? But it would stop their legs getting stuck!

She can lift her head and roll from back to front but not front to back. I suppose she is trying to roll and sleep on her front which is fine if she gets herself there but I’d rather place her on her back to start with and sometimes she falls asleep on her back and stays there all night.

I read somewhere that cot bumpers are a strangulation risk too but I’m not sure how. Still it makes me reluctant to use them. DS didn’t have anything at all in his cot with him until he was well over two and about to transition to a bed. I’ve always been a bit OTT with keeping the cot a clear space!

We used air wrap bumpers but this was ten years ago, not sure if they are advised anymore.

We used mesh bumpers for this reason. Really helped. And they are safe as far as I remember

Long shot but have you tried moving the cot so that it is in the position she ends up in?
There may be an environmental reason why she seeks end up positioning herself that way.

Mesh bumpers here too

My 7m LO has been doing this for about 2 months now, we went on holiday and I noticed she was fine in the travel cot because it was mesh not bars. Brought her home back in normal cot and was waking bashing herself on the bars so we switched out to the travel cot and she sleeps through the night again. It has a decent safe mattress though not a flimsy basic travel cot one

Mine used to stick legs through then turn over.

The wearable sleeping bags with arms for babies sorted it out. Sorry, can't remember exactly what they are called, maybe growbags and as was years ago I have no idea if they are still available or whether no longer recommend)

Oh my gosh, how heartbreaking. I’d ordered some mesh cot bumpers but obviously I’ll send them back now I’ve read that.

Unfortunately she’s in a tiny box room and the cot will only fit in one way so I can’t turn it around to match the way she seems to like sleeping. She’s in a very thin sleeping bag at the moment and I’m hoping a thicker bag when the weather cools down might stop her being able to get her leg through the bar.

If all else fails we’ve got a really nice travel cot with mesh sides that I can use.

Thanks for all the advice
