Curly hair and tantrums

HEEEELLLLLLLLP

Does anyone have any miracle for matted hair, my DDs hair regularly gets matted no matter how much conditioner and detangling spray we put on her her. She is 2.5 and has the most wonderful blonde curly hair, its quite long and i cant bring myself to get it cut yet. But there is a bit at the back, where she lays i guess that just gets like dreadlocks, some days i dont even bother to brush her hair just stick it in a scrunchie and hope people dont think im slovenly lazy mother. Her hair is lovely and everyone comment6s, but she cannot abide me brushing it and it always kicks off into lots of tears, tantrums and sobbing - sometimes not just DD!!

Im at a loss, also when she starts nursery im worried about head lice (had a big problem with this with DD1) as they are going to love her fine knotty hair.

the only thing i can suggest is either to trim it, or braid it.

My hair is quite long (midback) and i always get a bit at the back underneath that matts, its just friction against the clothes.. i either have to plait it or tie it up completely to stop it happening.

ah yes, braiding might be a good idea, but its not quite long enough, i will give it a try though

Sounds like you probably do need to cut it, if it is causing tears, tantrums and sobbing! And, as kaishay said, braiding it. Perhaps braiding it at night will help stop it getting matted while she sleeps?

I have veryu thick curly long hair, and have to tie it up at night or it ends up very matted and frizzy.

Have you tried giving her a mirror whilst you brush her hair- just a thought, it works a treat with ds when I need to brush his teeth and might be worth a go for hair brushing too! They can be narcissistic little so and so's

onebatmother · 26/02/2008 09:50

ha ha minkus - what a brilliant idea.

Minkus · 26/02/2008 09:52

oh do make sure it's got light bulbs daaahlink

ds is always ready for his close up

try leave-in conditioner instead of detangling spray

and buy the best conditioner and leave-in cond you can afford. thats what my hairdreser told me and its working better for my dd1

fishie · 26/02/2008 09:58

i've got fine curly hair too. don't brush it when dry, you will break it which makes it more likely to tangle. comb through conditioner when wet in bath and tie up at night.

yes get a decent comb. i've got this from boots. this looks good too.

friendlyedjit · 26/02/2008 10:08

have similar problem and am just getting to almost grips with... and dd is almost 6.
She is mixed race and has the most fabulous head of Afro hair type 3b/c. We're using lush products- either Big shampoo or rehab followed by retread conditioner. Then leaving in some some fantasia IC olive hair polisher.
Have spent ages and lots of money on trying different shampoos and lotions and potions but this ( at the moment seems to be helping) on the screamometer. Very little fussing at hair combing time.her hair smells delicious, and when I wash it it actually seems to get wet. She comes out of the bath with divine loose locks rather than dry hair!
It's often a matter of trying lots of different things though and finding what suits you. Her hair although Afro type doesn't really seem to suit Afro products?! and I'm no hairdresser....but all 3 dd's are now deighted with their lush regimen! and yes they each have a slightly different hair routine!! Good luck

friendlyedjit · 26/02/2008 10:10

yep absolutely the comb- big rake combs... anyone seen any with a handle though?

fishie · 26/02/2008 10:19

my first link has got a handle, it isn't quite as fine toothed as the pic suggests. prob with fine hair and strong conditioner is it can weigh it down and make it all lank and sticky - the lush retread is just too much for me. have tried lush coolaulin and it isn't strong enough, will try someting in the middle next time.

fishie · 26/02/2008 10:21

oh sorry, here this is the one i use. more expensive plastic = goes through hair smoothly.

friendlyedjit · 26/02/2008 10:37

Thanks- good comb but teeth need to be wider apart for us!!!!
Coolaulin is good for my dd3 who is curly but not as curly as dd2 and has finer hair. I use curly wurly shampoo for her. She now wants her hair left out!!
I also found Aussie Dual personality anti frizz and coditioning leave in milk stuff good for her. Great for getting her hair into a bun on a Saturday morning.
It's dreadful- I feel quite passionate about hair products that help/work when they work as it just makes life so much more pleasant!!!
I of course will use whatever is left over!! although have now developed a slight addiction with cacca marron henna!

Ahh the matted back problem. We had that one.

I tackled it by using mega type conditioners, the Aussie 3 minute miracle was very good, and teasing as much of the matting out with my hands while the conditioner was in as I could.

Always put hair into a ponytail or plait to sleep in.

Finally, when attempting to detangle when dry, I use a bit of serum rubbed through with fingertips. You can get a lot of tangles out that way, using the flat of your hands and fingers before the dreaded comb even comes out.

suedonim · 26/02/2008 13:09

Dd has fine waist-length, although not curly, hair which matts easily. After towel-drying I put serum through it and that helps with de-tangling.

When it's been really bad, I've detangled while she's in the bath. I slather the washed hair with conditioner and serum and use my fingers to get the worst knots out, followed by a comb. When it's done, I give her hair a quick rinse with the shower, making sure I don't ruffle it up again. It comes out beautifully soft and shiny!
