Potty training regression or UTI?

Toddler101 · 17/07/2023 19:52

DC1 potty trained in Feb this year at 2y4m and dry during the day, uses the big toilet even with toddler seat at home and just the big toilet when out and about.

New baby sibling arrived 3m ago when DC1 was 2.5y.

Toddler suddenly stared having wetting accidents for the first time at the end of last week (one at nursery then 3 more over the weekend and another today).

Does this sound like it's the potty-training regression we were fully expecting when new baby arrived or does this warrant a GP trip?

How soon after new baby arrives does potty training regression usually occur?

Thanks!

In case it wasn't clear - toddler didn't have any accidents when new baby arrived and now new baby is 3m....

Haven't been through the same but i do have a 3 year old and 2 year old.
3 year old has been potty trained since March so was nearly 3 at the time.
I think they're still so young and accidents do happen.
The novelty wears off and they don't care as much i feel because its not exciting anymore.
Also there's probably going to be a few regressions on the way with new sibling arriving.

I didnt think a UTI meant accidents, can they tell you it hurts? Have they complained of a stomach ache?

If you're really worried, obviously go with your gut and go to the GP.

I thought regression around a new sibling would have happened sooner though rather than 3m down the line? We've had all manner of big meltdown and big feelings/behaviours etc but no accidents.

Aside from this episode, toddler hasn't had an accident since day 3 of potty training back in Feb. When it happens it doesn't seem to be for attention, it doesn't seem to be because they're distracted either.

I thought it might be a sign of a possible UTI? Idk, Increased frequency maybe?

Could be a host of things I guess.
And maybe the new sibling thing has took its time for your little one to realise.

Honestly if you're worried, call the doctors, theres no harm 😊

Hmmm ok. Might monitor for a bit first then before GP. Thanks

How is your little one doing x

Better thank you, @TooBusyGazingAtStarss . I think you were right, novelty wearing off coupled with attention seeking. I've gone back to asking frequently if toddler needs to try the toilet or potty and returned to doing a celebratory 'toilet dance' as well (I didn't do sticker or rewards or charts or the like) and we seem to be back on track.

Thanks for your help, good to have a sounding board!

Aww good, glad to hear!
Sometimes you do just need to change it up a little 😊
I used to bribe my 3 year old with all sorts at time just to get him to go haha!
Gotta do what you gotta do!
But glad all is well and happy to have been able to ease your mind a bit 😊 x

I think at around 3 months, older sibling starts to realise that baby is actually quite boring, takes up a lot of mum's time, and now seems to be here to stay.
Glad things are improving - a bit of praise goes a long way 😁

@Seeline toddler is itching to play with baby and for baby to play back! I keep reminding myself that toddler is still just a baby too really, I wonder if I might have lost sight of that too with the actual baby.

Yeah I kept having to remind myself of the same when my second was small.
I still have to remind myself of their ages now and adjust my expectations appropriately.

This parenting lark is definitely not easy!
