10 week old suddenly refusing one breast

Hello, over the last few days my DS has been choking/spluttering more on one side during breastfeeding. Also fussy and wriggly. Tonight they then refused to feed from there altogether - I'm assuming because they're associating this with discomfort :( I've not had this issue up until now though?

Please can anyone offer any advice on next steps?

Thank you 🙏

If the milk is gushing out too quickly you could express it a bit so it's more comfortable speed for baby.

Thank you, I will try this.

Currently going through the 4 month fussy phase and I was advised that if baby refuses one side, try to feed them from that side during the night when they are sleepy as they will be less likely to refuse it.

You could have a bit of an oversupply in one breast and baby is struggling to cope with the milk flow. As PP said you could express a bit then let baby latch on after the letdown.

Also, if this helps take the pressure off, I’m feeding my seven month old from one side only. We both just gave up on righty, too much effort. He’s a lefty socialist feeder, no weight gain problems, he’s going great guns. There are things you can do obviously but just telling you this so you don’t panic about it!

Baby may have a sore ear on one side which makes it uncomfy. You could try a more upright feeding position perhaps?

Thank you everyone. I expressed the first bit with a Hakka and they are now drinking fine so that must be it. Plus built up some milk reserve :) but good to know that they would be ok with just the one boob too!

Ah well done. You're at peak milk production right now and it's normal to have a more vigorous let down on one side. Using the haaka too much will make this worse, so just be cautious of that. It'll all settle down in time. A laid back feeding position can help a baby manage a fast let down.
