How to help encourage 2 year old with independent play

My little man has always required ALOT of 1-1 attention which is fine, I’m his mama so I do it.

however, recently we’ve notice how he throws tantrums and has meltdowns if we aren’t engaging or playing with him constantly.

Like will walk around me moaning or have a meltdown constantly.

I very rarely see him play independently- even if just for 5/10 minutes.

Im not expecting a lot as I know he is a toddler, but I see so many other kids doing it.

I always make sure to play and engage with him every evening after work, without distractions.

His dad is also super hands on as well.

just wondering if you have any tips to encourage him to play more independently?

Leave out something like felt tip markers next to a lovely clear bit of wall.... or a big bag of flour in the middle of the kitchen floor then leave the room. You won't hear a peep. Sorry - I know you're looking for more helpful suggestions! I think you are mostly correct that independent play comes a little later than 2. I have seen it suggested that you set up a game and engage together for a few minutes then say mummy has to do xyz, I'll be back in a minute and then gradually extend the time you're away.

Yeah I’m not expecting a lot haha! It’s more because all of his friends sit and play with their toys even just with the mum floating around. And he doesn’t really love toys (it’s all books which we love) but sometimes it’s just hard haha.

If he's at Nursery he probably just needs as much attention as he can get in the evenings. If Nursery don't have any concerns about his play I think it will come naturally later.

I find it I start them off with something I can step back after a few minutes once they’re absorbed
