Is it really asthma?

Hello, thank you for reading. My 20 month old has had a continuous cough since autumn. First it was nursery colds and we were reassured it's back to back viral infections. When he would have temp with it we would get antibiotics prescribed. Fast forward many months the cough is still here- wet sounding, rattly chest but not whizzy as such. Happy, active toddler, great appetite, never out of breathe. In May we had a blue inhaler prescribed, didn't make any difference. Then brown. Yesterday we had a review with his gp and he said we are looking at a diagnosis of asthma. It doesn't present itself in a typical way and I really respect his gp, he's a very experienced doctor but I wonder if anyone got diagnosed and it turned out to be something different? We had a chest xray done which came back clear. My toddlers breathing is fine and inhalers don't make a difference. He just always sounds very phlegmy and once he coughs his breathing sounds regular again. I guess I could ask for a referral to a respiratory team when he's a bit older too. Forgot to mention- his cough isn't triggered by anything in particular.

Hi. I imagine all cases of asthma are different so I definitely don't want to give any medical advice. I have asthma and the part of your post that makes me sceptical about the diagnosis is the inhalers not working and a lack of wheezing. The blue inhaler should definitely result in relief as it is used for asthma attacks.

Have you checked house of any signs of mould? This can really affect people's breathing and I don't think asthma medication would help.
