Child poorly every 2 weeks

I want to know if anyone has been through this or going through this and how you coped/cope.

my child (3) has had a viral infection every two weeks since start of the year, is well for a week or so then ill again, doctors have said each one is completely normal and even how frequently its happening.

Doesn’t attend nursery yet but we go to groups and days out.

My DD is like this at nearly 4, she is in nursery but my GP now believes she has asthma. We are on an inhaler trial and the difference is huge!

So yes, it is common for them to get ill very often at that age, but in our case there also seems to be something else. DD still gets frequent colds but is not breathing as noisily and colds are not turning into awful coughs all the time.

Pudding20 · 13/07/2023 17:38

Oh really thank you for reply, how did you cope?

I have a 3 year old as well and I don't think it helped that as lockdown babies they weren't exposed to many germs in the first year and now they are catching up x

@Pudding20 ah it is hard. I'm hoping by the time they are 5ish we will be through the worst of it x

Mamabear04 · 14/07/2023 12:09

My 3yo is exactly the same. It is sooo hard and it means we cant do half the stuff we would if she were well. She just finished a course of antibiotics for a cough that lasted about 2 months (and also had antibiotics at the start due to a chest infection). The GP said she sees it a lot with covid babies, that they missed out when they were younger so they are getting back to back viruses/bugs now. FYI just prepare yourself for when your LO starts nursery as there will be more to pick up (hope there's not though!) It's bloody hard isn't it?

Oh gosh how awful for you and your family.
Each time I have take my little one, they say its viral nothing we can do and not helped when medicine doesnt bring their temp down so have to ride it out and it seems never ending.
I dread september when nursery starts, especially with my huge phobia of sick 🙈

@Pudding20 if I'm honest and ehat I've learned from the past 7 months since DD started nursery is that you need to really push with your GP and not give into the "it's viral" narrative. I had to take DD to the GP 3+ times before they did anything. If your worried I would push for a referral to get your LO checked out. I would also call their bluff and say "so DC high temperature is not coming down with calpol and has had a cough for xx weeks and you saying you aren't going to escalate it?" I've honestly had enough of GPs fobbing us off. Covid is not an excuse for lack of care. Hope your LO health improves soon!

Pudding20 · 14/07/2023 12:27

@Mamabear04 think im getting more annoyed as i have sat in tears in two separate doctors rooms with my child telling them im not doing ok with illnesses every two weeks and been looked at like im stupid and ignored then sent away left to deal with it.
Going to change GPs because the last few months have not helped me or my child, im not saying i want to have antibiotics every two weeks but surely there has to be a reason its happening so often and a red flag been at the doctors every two weeks!

This isn't normal. My son is 3 and has been sick twice in 8 months.

Get him checked again and push harder.

Mamabear04 · 14/07/2023 13:53

@Pudding20 don't let them gas light you! It's so hard but honestly I learned my own lesson a few weeks ago when I had a cough for 4 weeks. They kept fobbing me off saying it was "viral" and I ended up in hospital for 3 days. After that I took DD back to the GP and didn't take no for an answer. They gave her a different kind of antibiotic for 7 days and then was back to her usual self. Its so hard but don't give up!

So far today only one dose of nurofen needed this morning so fingers crossed this one is done.

My son was like this but every week. He'd be ok Monday to Friday then be ill for the weekends. It took about 18 months from starting nursery to settle down. It was awful. We was told it was normal too and to be honest I think it was. At the time I didn't though. We had stools sent off, blood work and everything was fine. It was just bug after bug and starting nursery in our case. Lots of viral coughs too.

Hello I was wondering if you had any luck figuring it out? As my 3 year old is the same I stopped her from nursery but she is still getting ill all the time..I am also pushing with DC's to do tests etc to figure it out like immunity tests..

Hi, DD started nursery sept and they were in hospital twice between sept and nov, with pneumonia and serious case of tonsillitis. was on a strong course of antibiotics and kept off school and didnt get ill once over xmas period.
Goes back to school today and honestly im dreading it.
But like you doctors are telling me covid babies are struggling more to build immunity and it is normal.
Its heartbreaking seeing them constantly poorly isnt it.

An update to my previous comment. My son now goes school and not nursery and he hasn't been poorly once. So he either got an exceptionally string immune system after catching every bug going or his nursery hygiene standards were poor. I'm now questioning if it was the latter. I hope your little ones feel better soon

Pudding20 · 11/01/2024 22:12

@mermuadi child back at nursery, not been there a week and is snotty and coughing. So relentless and feel at such a loss

We have had 3 hospital visits, all chronic tonsillitis, currently at the end of half term and seems to have caught a cough again (only finished antibiotics two weeks ago) im honestly struggling! I just want to DD well for longer than two weeks at a time.
