DD did a poo in the potty - what now?

DD is 22 months. We've had the potty around, but no intention to start potty training for a while yet (started at 3y old with DS).

She's just been enjoying sitting on it. This morning I let her run around nappy free for a bit as she had a nappy rash. She sat on the potty for a mere few seconds, said "poo poo" and did a poo.

She looked concerned at first but I gave her lots or praise and we flushed it together and she was so excited and gesturing at her dad and brother to tell them.

Should I officially start potty training? I don't want to miss a window of opportunity but at the same time she's so young, could she already get it? Or are we going to struggle for weeks as it was a total fluke?

worth trying it same sort of time every day for poo!

Keep going, my nephews potty trained at a similar age. When they’re ready they’re ready. Hope it works out!

It might be a fluke but in your shoes I'd make moves to start potty training yeah. My nephew was fully day potty trained (obviously he had the odd accident) at 22 months cos my sister was due another baby, so she started training him from 18 months.

Ooo OK I'm excited then! Yes she tends to poo at this time most mornings (usually involves taking her back upstairs for a nappy change just as we're trying to get out of the door!) so I guess it's a no brainer to try the potty every morning around that time.

It's crazy how much quicker second DCs grow up! She can talk a lot more and copies so much, so yes maybe she is ready. I remember the struggle of getting DS to poo anywhere other than in a nappy, he completely refused for so long!

Kids can potty train from 18 months. It can be easier at 24 months but think of all the extra time without buying or changing nappies. Also Summer is the ideal time with less clothes. All three of my nephews were trained before 2. We waited for Summer so my daughters were/will be trained just after they turned/will turn 2.

Yes @AegonT I'd love not having to buy nappies again!

This morning we went nappy free and she did a poo, but on the floor....

I was however busy getting eldest ready and didn't do such a great job in encouraging her to sit on the potty. Will try again tomorrow!

Currently training a slightly reluctant three year old - if there's enthusiasm I'd pounce!

I have a friend whose boys are 18 months apart, the youngest decided to train himself at a very young age as he wanted to be the same as his brother. Zero work for the parents, amazing.

Do it! My eldest son potty trained the week after he turned two. I thought I had somehow nailed the whole experience as he literally never had accidents but alas my other children proved me wrong 😂

Tina8800 · 13/08/2023 21:52

I definitely would. We also have a potty and hoping to start soon with my daughter (she's 19 months, so I won't push it but try to encourage it).
My friend also told me that girls usually potty trained earlier than boys. Not sure if that's true, but seems to me your daughter is ready.

DD had more success on a padded seat that went on the toilet with a couple of steps (can get similar at Argos) , it was more comfortable I think. She sat on it at the same time everyday and then one day declared she wasn't wearing nappies anymore as she was a big girl and that was it. I didn't potty train purposefully just started to fit it into our daily schedule and she caught on.
I would only start trying to do it purposefully if you are in a position to be consistent and smaller children have smaller bladders so will need to go more often.

Thanks all, I posted a few weeks ago and unfortunately this experience seems to have traumatised DD! Now she cries whenever she doesn't have a nappy on as she is worried she will do a poo.

Through bathtime and nappy changes she cries "nappy! Poo! Nappy! Poo!" She's so worried that a poo will just come out while she has no nappy on.

So in the end it's made her even less ready than ever. Sigh! Let's hope she gets over it soon.
