Going away this week.. into the southern Europe heatwave!!
never flown with baby before..

  1. what should I dress him in? It’s gonna be hot when we get there but the planes are usually cold?
  2. do they have baby change on Ryanair?

any other flying tips? He’s 8mo

I’d dress in a sleepsuit with vest under and then remove sleepsuit when you are nearly there. Take extra vests in hand incase.
not flown Ryan air to know about baby change but I would like most do as they wouldn’t have you changing a nappy on your knee … surely?! We flew tui and they had facilities on the plane.

They will have a baby change in one of the loos. But the loos are all tiny so baby change is small. It's a pull down flap. And is just a flat surface. No mat or sides. If you have a foldable mat its worth taking so you know that baby is lying on a clean surface.
Take a few spare nappies in case your luggage gets trapped. Don't forget even Ryanair carries baby items for free.
Don't forget change of clothes for yourself in hand luggage in case of leaking nappy or baby sick.....

Agree with above, I would dress baby in vest and sleepsuit, but use a zip up sleepsuit because changing in a plane toilet is a faff and the zips are easier (Sainsbury's do them). I wore a hoodie and used that as a blanket for baby when needed on plane. Change of clothes for baby and you in the hand luggage.

I would also take Calpol sachets for sore ears, spill free snack cups (like the Munchkin ones), sanitiser wipes (for wiping down trays, seats, armrests all of which my baby seemed to want to lick immediately 😆).

Sleepsuit, with a light cardy/ jumper thing that can be taken on and off.

Pack more than one spare. First flight with my 4 month old he got the runs somehow. leaked poo onto three sleepsuits, we were on our last change and praying.

Vest under baby-grow. Yes to changing table

PinkDaffodil2 · 12/07/2023 23:34

We just flew to Lanzarote with a 4 month old - we had him in sleep suits over vests (plus a jumper for the 3am start in the UK!). We took 3 spare vests and 3 spare sleep suits which was about right. He wet through one change then vomited over another on the transfer coach 🤦🏻‍♀️

PinkDaffodil2 · 12/07/2023 23:38

Jet2 had a tiny changing table in the tiny toilet cubicle.
Remember a change of clothes for yourself. And something for little one to suck on for take off / landing. DS 4mo is breastfed which was easy enough, DD 4yo got through way too many sweets in the name of stopping her ears hurting. The plane was warmer than I remembered, packed a blanket but only used it in the taxi to get to the airport, could have just used my spare top or a large muslin.

What does he normally wear during the day? I would go for a version of that with layers you can take off or on as needed eg vest, leggings, cardigan. Definitely a few changes of clothes just in case. For a long haul flight I would go with sleepsuit. Generally for southern Europe you might not need many sleepsuits unless you like the air-con quite cold overnight.

Sirzy · 13/07/2023 07:22

If you can time it right feeding during take off can be useful as the sucking will hopefully help the ears.

Alway1insomethingstat · 13/07/2023 11:08

Thank you all! He tends to hate being too warm so atm he’s in one layer lol

are you allowed to take water through security for baby?

Yes, you need a complete change of clothes for everyone in your party sitting near the baby, projectile vomiting can cause a huge mess! DS2 was sick over me, DH and my Mum on one short flight 20 years ago, I remember it all so clearly even now!
I'd put the baby into something you easily change, separate tops and bottoms.

Metooyou · 13/07/2023 11:14

Something comfortable, probably leggings, a tshirt and cardigan/hoody. I’d take something light in my bag to swap him into when you arrive, like a pair of shorts or dungarees

Metooyou · 13/07/2023 11:15

And 100% spare clothes for you, you’ll be very glad of them if you end up needing them 😬 I usually take an emergency sleepsuit everywhere too in case I got to the desperate stage and had nothing else left for baby to change into

ecossegirl91 · 13/07/2023 11:17

@Alway1insomethingstat so I tried to take hot water through but security tipped it out - the powder and ready made feed was fine.
I was able to refill my thermos with hour water at a cafe after security

Caspianberg · 13/07/2023 15:22

I do short sleeve vest, leggings and cardigan. That way can wear just vest and leggings if warmer in plane, add cardigan if needed, just short sleeve vest if really warm.

takealettermsjones · 13/07/2023 16:09

I was allowed to take DD's (full) water bottle through at Manchester airport.

johnd2 · 13/07/2023 17:52

You can take water through but you might have to smell it or taste it and it might delay things at security.
Another option if they are on tap water is to just fill it up after the security check using the water dispenser.
Regarding the plane, if you pick seats in the middle they are warmer. The seats close to the side of the plane can be quite cold.
