Periods after having children

DS is 18 months old and I breastfed him til 12 months old. My periods came back when he was around 11 months and have been regular ever since.

What I can't deal with is the horrendous mood swings every month. It's got to the point that DH knows when I'm due on as it's now so predictable. He's wonderfully supportive but this can't carry on. I was never like this before having children. I feel like my normal self the rest of the time.

Can anyone relate? Did anything help?

How old are you? Could it be peri-menopause?

BritishDesiGirl · 12/07/2023 20:38

Yes, l had horrendous PMS. I felt murderous at points. I started taking Agnus cactus, it really helped regulate my moods. I stopped taking it once l started TTC.

Exactly rhe same but with the addition of pouring with blood. It's wonderful!!!!

PleaseNoDontBeSickAgain · 12/07/2023 21:25

Yes, same here. I took cerazette for about 15 years before my two kids, and it never gave me any problems at all. Restarted it after DC2 and my periods were absolutely murderous as were my moods. Thankfully all calmed down again a while after giving up cerazette. Are you using hormonal contraceptives?

Caravanvirgin · 12/07/2023 21:27

Yep. along with short but really heavy periods. Pill sorted it all out.

roseopose · 12/07/2023 21:30

Me too although I still got PMT pre kids. But then I was on the pill from 17 to TTC in my thirties so maybe it's just what I'm naturally like! I thought it would settle within a year of giving birth but if anything it's getting worse and DD is nearly 3. I'm going to ask for either the pill or anti depressants.

Bridgingthefeckingmassivegap · 12/07/2023 21:45

Yes! I self diagnosed PMDD and take Agnus Castus...3 years on it's only every now and again instead of every month

escapingthecity · 12/07/2023 21:46

I get really tired the day before mine starts now, the stomach cramps are worse and they're much heavier than they were. I'm going to take iron supplements to help with the tiredness

abbs1 · 12/07/2023 21:54

Oh my goodness OP you've literally taken the words out my mouth. I'm exactly the same. My periods came back 6 months pp even with exclusively bf my daughter. I stopped 7 weeks ago finally at 15 months old as the bf made my PMS a thousand times worse and my periods are ridiculously heavy and painful like labour.
I'm now on mefanamic acid and tranexamic acid for each period which are helping so much.
Still trying to get on top of my PMS as my husband always knows when it's coming as he can see my mood swings.

annlee3817 · 12/07/2023 22:02

Same, had my second last August and the PMT has been absolutely awful, I just feel like I'm in a deep dark hole and nothing makes me happy until the period has started

BobbleWobble1 · 12/07/2023 22:22

Thanks for the replies. I feel a lot less alone but I'm sorry you're all suffering too.

I'm not taking hormonal contraceptives but thinking about going on something. It's only the moods that are the issue. Flow, cramps, tiredness and skin breakouts are mild and about the same as before kids so I can deal with that fine.
