Advice on reflux/ tummy pain

Hi all,

looking for some advice with reflux and tummy pain.
DS is now 9 weeks old and we were prescribed baby gaviscon for reflux.
I think it did start to work but then he started to get constipated and so we had to stop. Baby is EBF which I’m doing really well with considering we had a tongue tie cut at 6 weeks old and the feeding improved. We aren’t there 100% and I don’t think we ever will but it’s better.

The issue we still have is he is sick after feeds unless held upright for 30 minutes. Hates sleeping on his back, the cot, the car, the car seat and the bassinet as all involved being on his back.

He doesn’t mind sleeping on his side or stomach so I’m having to keep him on his left side…. Against my better judgement.

His grandparents have now stated that being breastfed to sleep and laying on us to sleep upright because of the reflux is not sustainable which I do agree with as we come up to 3 months.

any advice on reflux medicine which has actually worked and slowly transitioning baby to have their naps in a cot?

thanks in advance!

Omeprazole! Also way easier for breastfed, literally syringe in once a day, that's why the doctor prescribed us this.

She was sick several times a day, my tops were disgusting by the end of the day if they made it all day. In the 2 weeks she's been on it she's only been sick a few times and my clothes are clean at the end of the day

I can sympathise, the first three months were hell for all of us, too. We were prescribed lactulose first, which is a laxative. It helped MASSIVELY, and then we were prescribed gaviscon to help with reflux. We were the same as you, had to keep her upright, she hated being on her back etc etc. Both of these meds together have made my baby an absolute delight. Defo worth looking into!

If you Google risk of SIDS by age, the rate falls substantially after 6 months, so the sleeping on the side/ tummy will not be such an
issue then.

I had a baby with reflux and you have my sympathies. In an ideal world you keep them on their back for as long as possible, but you have to weigh up other factors - quality sleep also contributes to the baby's wellbeing and your sanity!

thanks, I’m going to go back to my GP today. He’s not a happy baby at the minute and so with any luck they will prescribe it!

Forgot to say did sleeping get better at all? Should have mentioned yesterday he had one cat nap during the day due to general fussiness and so DS was a delight!

I tried breastfeeding to sleep, rocking, shushing, the pram and all failed. Our only method of success seems to a dark quiet room and feeding upright… not sustainable when out and I’m hoping this is to do with the reflux?

Spoke to GP and Omeprazole was discussed but apparently it’s unlicensed and the cost is ‘sky high’ so nothing will be prescribed as she will need to consult with someone in paediatrics before she can prescribe DS anything!! She thinks about a week until she comes back to me! This is for something in liquid form… tablets crushed up as a quick solution not an option as dosage wouldn’t be accurate.

apparently GP’s are monitored for drugs which are expensive (first I’ve ever heard of this) meanwhile I’m stuck with a ratty baby at home :(

I sympathise with you! Have you begun gaviscon is it helping what dosage are you on and how much does baby weigh ? Push again for omeprazole my baby is on it liquid form gp had no issue prescribing it however I can say it’s helping however every baby is different ! try see another gp tomorrow or go to children’s walk in / a&e and see a pead you can book an appt on 111 I had to do this to get gaviscon in the first place! If baby is throwing up most feeds say they are at risk of dehydration they have no reason not to see you x

My LO hated being on his back due to wind so we got a wedge pillow so he wasn't completely flat and he was better with it

sunlover1123 · 14/07/2023 08:33

Thanks @Tiredjoanna DS is in a next to me cot which tilts so his head is up - this doesn’t really seem to help as he either wants to be completely upright or on his tummy

@01mex we’ve got the infant gaviscon but it’s causing constipation, still using it but there seems to be little results with it. I will try your suggestion of 111

Have you had a look at the baby reflux lady on Instagram? She has a book too. GPs aren't always the most clued up on reflux.

She's just @babyrefluxlady

01mex · 14/07/2023 15:51

How long have you been on it ? You can use 2.5 Ml lactulose if poops are hard or like pebbles from pharmacy! My little one only gets constipated every now and then of it now she’s been on it a while it seemed to have settled x

Laserbeam24 · 14/07/2023 16:46

Have you heard of the babocush cushion? It attaches to their rocking/swinging chair and it has a harness that holds them upright on their tummy. They're expensive but defo worth it for a moments peace. It also vibrates!
