Do all children have good memories?

This isn’t a ‘isn’t my child gifted’ post because I don’t think she is, but DH doesn’t think he was like this as a kid. So it’s curiosity really.

Do your children remember exact details about things? A couple of examples:

After her birthday party she knew which classmate each present was from by seeing the wrapping paper when they arrived with it.

In the evening will tell us the last sentence that we read the night before to find our place in the book.

She’s 5, so at that age when their brains are sponges.

I think they do generally, yes. If it's something that piques their interest their memory is incredible. Something like where dirty clothes go or what you need to do to get ready for school will be forgotten multiple times a day.

Or flush the loo and put the seat down. That's forgotten every single time.

I think they don’t have the same amount of background noise so they pay more attention/retain the stuff that feels important. They are also well slept, well nourished and don’t drink booze. I’d be sharper if I followed my 8 year olds life style.

I think it’s exactly these things, no other brain clutter about bin days and raffle tickets and who needs taking where and when.

I was just curious because DH was surprised by it yet I’d assumed they’re all squirrelling away these details.

Memories are fascinating. DH can go somewhere once and remember the way next time. I can’t remember the way to my best friend’s house after 5 years!

Yet I remember everything that was said in meetings exactly, even months later. It makes me much better at my job but also means I’m terrified of the menopause.

My kids will watch a tv program and say 'that actor was the boy sitting three rows behind Harry Potter in (whatever Potter movie)' that they saw four years ago. They can have amazing memory for that sort of thing but still not remember their water bottle which they need every day for school....
