Single or double bed

We are moving our 4 year old DS into the bigger bedroom and am wondering should we keep the double bed that's there for him or go out and buy single bed? I like the idea of a double for reading stories and if someone needs to stay in an emergency but then he'd have more room to play with a single, what are your thoughts

Do they still have room to play with a double?

if the double takes up all the room I would get a single. However if the double still allows for toys / playing / other things in the room I would be tempted to keep the double

There's still a decent amount of floor space and our front dining room is basically a playroom also. just feel once he gets used to a double it'll be hard to get him to go into a single ever if I want to move more toys from downstairs up in the future. We're coming down with toys and have a baby whose toys also take up loads of space downstairs

If you go on holiday he’ll most likely sleep in a single, so for that reason I’d consider a single.

I’d stick with a double if I could for my child

Imogensmumma · 08/07/2023 06:50

I’d keep the double personally when he is having a bad night or unwell, trouble sleeping, books etc , needs a cuddle there is space. To be honest you could have a massive amount of room to play with toys in his room he would still want to play right under your nose!! So keep the double bed and the few times on holiday he will have to cope with a single

I'd get a single, you will have years of bedding washing loads before he could use the space in the double to sleep diagonally as a long legged teen. Single bedding is less washing and drying, especially in winter.

Why replace a perfect good bed? Sounds like play space isn’t an issue and a double gives more flexibility e.g. if you want to use the bed for guests. My 6YO has had a double for 2 years now and no regrets. When we go on holiday or she stays with relatives she’s absolutely fine in a single. I don’t find the washing any more difficult than her younger brother’s single, in winter we use the dryer anyway and it maybe takes 7 more seconds to do the duvet cover. I can’t see what the possible downside could be.

gogomoto · 08/07/2023 07:19

I'd keep the one that's there

Hugasauras · 08/07/2023 07:34

We have a double for our 4yo. Much more flexible (illnesses, guests, soft toy army!) and comfier for us when we are doing bedtime or having a cuddle with her! She sleeps fine in a single when we go away.

Singleandproud · 08/07/2023 07:37

Don't replace a perfectly good bed, when that one wears out get a small double instead. The toy years don't last forever, you've only got a few years left for big toys then it'll be smaller, easier to store things like lego and games consoles etc instead.

DS went from a single to double this year and it's 50% bigger, so 50% more washing and drying space needed. No dryer. Over a year it adds up.

pizzaHeart · 08/07/2023 10:59

I agree with @Singleandproud leave the bed if you have space and get small double later.

My nearly 4 year old DD has a double, we needed the cot bed for DS so it was either keep the double or get rid and buy a single.
Double has been fab for stories on a night, just getting in with them when they are upset in the night.
We had a bed guard on for a while. When we've had visitors they have stayed in there and DD in with us.
If still play space on the floor, go for it.

mondaytosunday · 08/07/2023 12:12

My kids had singles but my son then opted for a double, then we moved and he had a single and my daughter took his double, then they decided to switch back!
Get the double if there's room.

CatWithKittens · 08/07/2023 15:36

Think of his future bedmates and buy a single so he does not learn to be bedhog!
