In my country, parents start potty training their kids from a very young age. Also, when i trained my son, it took a long time (he was 15 weeks prem so i knew it would take longer anyway). I thought it would be a good idea to introduce my baby to a potty, just so she gets used to seeing it, etc so when the time came to train her, it might help a bit.

I put her on it while i was running her bath. she seemed happy to sit and play. The the next morning i put her on it and she weed and pooed!
Shes been doing it ever since! Just thought id share with you all.

Im not bothered what age she ends up in pants at all and im not one of those parents who worry about their childs development (i walked at 18 months while my twin walked at 10, and my son walked at 20 months). My dd took longer than average to sit, crawl etc but it didnt bother me at all.

Its worth a try just buying a potty when theyre young so when they ARE ready to train, they wont be scared of it or not used to seeing it etc.

I think that's a good idea, and you're doing it for all the right reasons. It also helps them get used to pooing and weeing in a sitting position.

We do this with our DD to Thinking about starting with Baby Bea from the start when he/she arrives in August.

Where are you from ? It is interesting to hear about other cultures parenting tips.

Its come back into fashion!

When I grew up kids were potty trained at about a year old. When I had my first, 25 years ago this had gone out of fashion, but we had a sort of EC thing going. I knew exactly when he was going to poo, so from him being probably about 9 months old I sat him on the pot after his meals and he did me a poo. As I was using terry nappies, it saved me a lot of bother!

I kept this up until he was about 18 months, then started to potty him more regularly and after a while I gradually abandoned nappies when we were at home in favour of trainer pants. When he was 23 months he was reliably dry.

It was very easy..... then baby number 2 came along and it didnt work!!! She was nearly 3 before she was trained.

We did this with dd1 from just over a year old and she was day dry in pants by 22 months and night dry by 23. Dd2 has just turned a year and i think she would be more likely to pee/poo in it then tip it up or eat it!! think we'll leave her for a while yet.

I agree it is a good idea to get them used to seeing it lying aroudn though - my friends ds was terrified of it and she ended up not starting training til just before he turned 3 when he was big enough to go straight to the toilet and miss the potty out.

I'm from Ghana, in West Africa. Mum was only 15 when she came here so she doesnt know how they did things back in the day but my husband told me they all do it when their babies are little, by holding them over the toilet.

I suppose if youre around your child most of the time some people can just sense when their child is going to wee or poo.

I think its amazing that by 23 months your baby was dry yelnats! ill just play it by ear at the moment and see how it goes.

I held her over the toilet this morning. I thought id hold her for a minute or so and if she didnt do anything, just put her on the potty as usual. She weed straight away when i put her on the toilet. Ill see how it goes tomorrow.

Interesting. We had a potty in the bathroom left from DD1. Whe DD2 was 17 months sat her on it for an experiment and lo and behold she did a wee. Was dry in the days from a few weeks after that. had trouble finding knickers small enough to fit her. saying that DD1 was dry at 2 and never had an accident whereas DD2 had an occasional accident until about 2ish.
i do think its a good idea to have a potty around to get them used to the idea - same as letting them see us using the loo.

WOW a few weeks after sitting on the potty for the first time. Amazing!
My DD goes to nursery and they tend not to help that much with potty training so im not sure if she'll be one of those kids who are dry by day quite young. As long as its a smooth transition ill be happy.

i put the potty in the sitting room. I think ill put it in the bathroom from now on and maybe sit her on there when i go. worth a try

my ds sees me on the toilet alot, peeing and pooing, and will also sit on his potty and pee or poo (he's 10 mo too!) and we've been doing this occasionally now since he was 4 weeks old. atm he is really into moving around, but will sit on the potty of his own free will, we don't force him to do anything. when he pees or poos we make a fuss of it, praise him for what he has done and if he doesn't manage anything, we still praise him for sitting on the potty anyhow.
as OP has stated, it's good to introduce the potty early as it's less alien for them when the time eventually comes to potty train them properly.
neither do we have a limit on when we want him to be dry and off nappies, that will happen when he is ready.

it's good to know there is a thread on this, potty training early malark. rare to find.

dylsmum1998 · 07/03/2008 22:18

my ds was dry day and night by his 22 months.
but my dd is 22 months now will be lucky if she is by 2. more circumstance i think, as she is starting to show signs now, but due to circumstance she is with a childminder a few mornings a week and unsure about starting her one day then she somewhere else next. i have a few weeks off soon, so gonna give it a go then
