Cyanosis- 2.5yo ds turns blue - docs say "it's just something that happens"

Hi,

My son was premature but appears to have no significant health issues age 2.5.

When it's cold his lips turn blue - this is just something I've got used to. I warm him up quickly when it happens but that's about all.

Yesterday his nursery called me to say he had turned entirely blue. He was playing inside and they wrapped him up in 2 jumpers and a coat but it still wasn't going away. When I got him to the Dr another hour later he still had a blue tinge. They tested his oxygen Sat's listened to his heart and core temp and everything was fine.

They said "maybe he just turns blue".

He had been playing indoors with the heaters on yesterday. I feel so worried as it doesn't seem right. Has anyone else had this? Xx

I would take them back to a different doc. It can be a sign of circulation issues especially as he was premature.

I have known of this in other children although havent expereinced it personally

Yes the medical consensus appears to be that 'its just how it is', thats only after tests to confirm nothing else is going on.

Has he had any other tests, neurological testing etc?

@CarelessSquid07A do you have any more details about what kind of circulation issues so I can do some reading and get back to them? Xx

I was born with a mild heart condition and it was always one of the signs my parents and teachers needed to watch out for to monitor for symptoms. It was rare and only when absolutely freezing. I think it was more a concern if it happened when I'd been exercising.

I'd imagine your son would have had all the cardiac checks etc when he was born so maybe just is cold sensitive. Can always get a kids pulse ox thing for home so you can check when it happens.

It would have come under this.

The only GP that could pick up the heart murmur with a stethoscope was an ex cardiologist so easy to miss.
