Bad constipation?

Sorry for the TMI but I need some advice please!

My little one (2.5yo) has been really struggling with constipation the past few days! He has been sitting on his potty for 15/20 mins straining and struggling so much, and when he does eventually poop it is so solid and hard the poor thing! He's crying in pain some of the time and it's horrible to see :(. He goes every other day on average (always has) but never usually struggles like this.

He drinks a lot of water; but isn't great with fruit and veg (it is always offered with
Meals/snacks. Anything else I can try?

Movicol!

Caravanvirgin · 02/07/2023 20:42

I second movicol from the GP.

Prunes every other day - chopped up into porridge or eaten on their own.

Movicol is amazing
Also as soon as he’s able teach him to blow bubbles. We had a pot in each bathroom. Really works. Helps relaxation.

We had a horrible episode of constipation with my 3 year old DD recently which I posted about not too long ago. As others have said movicol is what you need!

Thanks all! Looks like movicol is the way to go

Child-sized glycerin suppositories in the short term - they're a godsend.

Movicol all the way! Little and often as he is actually managing to produce. Too much and he'll get the runs.

If it happens again, consider prune juice. It does help, and many toddlers will.give fruit juice a go even if they're not great with fruit/veg (I've been there!!!). Also think about alternative ways to get fibre in - my eldest we used to make flapjacks with whole oats. Lots of fibre, and fun to make with her (messy....). She didn't like them with raisins despite my best efforts.... but chopped dates/dried apricots were a winner, and if I needed her to eat a lot we'd stick some glace cherries in. In summer I made her frozen yoghurt that was fruity or sorbet/Ice pops made with whole fruit (don't remove the skin).

Some children easily get their daily fibre. My boys love fruit so it's easy as they'd eat grapes/cherries/raisins all day. But we had to be very creative with my eldest to avoid constipation.

Good luck!

I see this mentioned a lot on here, but I am sure our pharmacy wouldn’t sell me them.

Bobbybobbins · 03/07/2023 21:01

For a child that age I would see your GP and get a prescription. My DS had bad constipation when he was 1.5 and the GP said it can get bad pretty quickly when they are little.

Also cloudy apple juice. It has a sugar in it that gets them going.

Amazon sell them.

Oh that’s useful. Thanks.

If he’s on full fat milk, try moving him to semi-skimmed. This turned out to be the cause of my three year kid’s constipation and we’ve had no further episodes since we switched to semi-skimmed. Really random as he’s fine with all other dairy!

Have a look on the ERIC website it's a really good resource.
