How many kids for bday party at home?

Planning a small, low-key party for my son's 4th birthday in August. We want to have it at home - more sociable, less pressure etc. But how many kids is too many?? I have a list of 12 so far - is that crazy? We live in a 4 bed semi. Open plan downstairs, though not huge, plus medium sized garden. Any experience of throwing a 4 year old's party at home?

12 isn’t crazy, but I wouldn’t do any more. How many other adults do you have? And do you have any other children? Do you reckon many parents will stay? What entertainment do you plan? All these factors will determine how many children you can successfully look after/keep entertained.

Thinking of limiting to say, 1.5 hrs, party food, lots of balloons, let them run around the garden - play on swings / slide, sand pit, playhouse. Basically like a large playdate. Maybe a game of pass the parcel??

I think 12 is the absolute limit, at a 4th birthday I think lost parents will stay so any more would be a squeeze! An hour and a half for food and some playing sounds lovely. Don't do pass the parcel, some kids don't want to sit still but want to join in, some cry when they don't win...

Lost parents?? Lots of parents!

Swerve pass the parcel with what I assume will be 3-4 year olds, that sounds like a recipe for disaster! Other than that sounds like a lovely party. I would keep 12ish as a maximum as I imaging all parents will stay. There is no way I’d trust DS at a party in someone’s house unattended 😂it’ll be fine if you have a decent enough garden though - id be more than happy to sit down on a picnic blanket or something outside if it isn’t raining!

I did 10 children from about 6 families in the background garden recently for my 5 year old and they loved it. Party was relaxed and went the whole afternoon.

We also got a bouncy coaster which was a huge hit

Pass the parcel is common at that age around here, they all seem to manage it okay, but if you've not been to any parties where it's been played, maybe give it a miss. Musical statues is also very popular, and can easily be played without any winners or losers if necessary.

If you have space, it's worth setting up a colouring area or something quieter – we've just had my daughter's 4th birthday in a small church hall, and the colouring area was well used.

I’d definitely invite all 12, as I reckon a fair few won’t come due to holidays.

For myDDs 4th, we had 15 kids, which just about fit (and we have a similar house to you it sounds like), but that included some that were siblings so not that many parents. The onlything that was a bit of a squash was lunch.

10-15 I usually invite about 12 and know 2 mums that will bring older siblings (friends with my middle one and they become the helpers )
30mins play 30mis food 20mins play cake and home time.
I hope it's a great experience for you all
