Childs hair cut at school

Not sure what to do with this one!

Picked up by child from school early for an appointment, noticed some areas of her hair are shorter than another's. It's been cut at school 🤦🏻‍♀️she has been asking for shorter hair so I'm pretty sure she's either a). Cut it at school herself
Or b). Asked one of her friends too.

It's definitely not happened at home as scissors are out of reach for her.

I've asked her teacher to give me a call but not sure what to say on this one. Surely this is something they would notice if they were being supervised?

You appear to be under the assumption the scissors were sharp/dangerous, OP. Scissors don't need to be sharp to hack off bits of hair. My niece once gave my DD layers with those pink, plastic scissors you used to get with Girl's World heads.

My youngest also gave herself a haircut at school. Scissors were a fascination of hers to the point where we actually kept them in a locked box in the end as she was so determined to cut her hair, clothes, bedding, and the cat's hair... No matter where we hid the scissors or high up we put them she found a way to get them.

Imo giving yourself/your sibling/your mate a dodgy haircut with a pair of safety scissors is a childhood right of passage the same as sticking a pebble/lego/skittle up your nose or in your ear. It's something almost all kids will do at least once.

My DS cut a chunk off his hair in Y1. Apparently the hair told him to do it. His poor NQT looked petrified when she came to the classroom door to find me at hometime but I just laughed. They can't have eyes on all the children all the time.

neilyoungismyhero · 26/06/2023 16:37

Considering in a lot of workplaces now, proper scissors and knives are not allowed due to health and safety issues it seems odd that a child could get scissors sharp enough to cut hair..I'm not a fuss pot person but would be concerned about kids waving sharp instruments around other kids faces/eyes.

You have very little understanding of a primary classroom @JeandeServiette

Ha. I've spent more time in primary classrooms than many.

Although, thinking about it, in the area I grew up, and in which my mother taught, there had been an infamous eye injury from safety scissors in the (I think) 1970s - the blade ended up embedded in the eye - which got referenced a lot. So maybe they were all freakishly uptight about safety. Maybe everywhere else scissors are treated in the same way as PVA.

I cut the plait off the girl sitting in front of me at school once.
Lovely long blonde plait plopped on the floor. Goodness me was I in trouble!

PickySlackTastic · 26/06/2023 16:48

Oh my @Tlolljs Grin

shatteredL · 26/06/2023 16:48

Mystery solved. It was her best friend 🤣 teacher was lovely

It happens.

My son and his friend cut each others hair at school and when I took him to the hairdresser to get it fixed she said they have kids in every single week after a hair cutting incident at school.

What workplaces don't allow scissors???

PickySlackTastic · 26/06/2023 16:57

@shatteredL I hope your DD’s hair is fixable.

There’s no harm mentioning it to the teacher - it will be useful for her to keep an eye out in case it happens again.

Unless you’ve spent a lot of time in a Reception classroom, it’s quite hard to understand the way they work. A classroom in which the children weren’t trusted to explore using scissors independently would be a very miserable place.

It's really not that bad tbh, obviously noticeable and a bit too short to take it the whole length up that high but I'll let it grow out slightly and then get her a Bob like she's asked, providing the mithering continues 😊🤣

In reception, my DD cut her friend's hair, got told off for it and had the scissors removed, then went and retrieved the scissors and cut her own hair. Apparently when told that "scissors are for cutting paper" she replied, "but there are so many other things I want to cut with them".

The biggest issue for me was that she actually cut herself a decent fringe, so there was no natural consequence of looking ridiculous until it grew back. I ended up showing her pictures of children who gave themselves awful haircuts on the internet. She asked me why they were all crying.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 that's hilarious. How do you limit how to paper cutting only?!😳

I once went in to help at my DC's preschool and one of the kids cut my hair! I had a Mr Majika like quiff for weeks!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2023 17:11

to (sooner or later) notice if chunks of hair show up

Ha, when my DD cut her fringe to about 1cm long (before she was school age) I was very proud that I merely mildly asked her where her fringe was as there was no sign of it. She said she didn't know.

Years later, I happened to open a book on the shelf next to where she'd been - mystery finally solved!Grin

Sunnysunbun · 26/06/2023 17:13

She probably did it at home and you didn't notice

QuillBill · 26/06/2023 17:13

I once asked a child where a chunk her hair was and she said ‘outside’. And it was.

What! Where is this occurring?

Maybe if they had been exposed to scissors when they were four they wouldn’t be so excited by them as adults. Or incompetent. I’m not sure which reason these workplaces aren’t allowed scissors.

In EYFS children are actively encouraged to use scissors.

I cut the little girl next door’s hair when we were both about five. I believe I gave her the wonky fringe cut which , many years later, would be modified and adopted by some New Romantic bands of the 80s. She didn’t cut my hair as I had to go home for my tea.

This will probably become a tale you tell when she gets older. One of my friends daughters cut her fringe when she had been put to bed…the night before she was a bridesmaid. She did it because she wanted to look good for the wedding.

JeandeServiette · 26/06/2023 16:08

I expect staff not to turn their backs on a class once scissors have been handed out, to count scissors back in, to (sooner or later) notice if chunks of hair show up on the classroom floor...Yes.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for that. I needed a good laugh today 😂

Omg you'd be furious wouldn't you! Luckily it's not too bad, now the initial WHAT THE FUCK has worn off, I'm okay with it 🤣 nobody is in trouble, the girl has been spoken to, my child has also been told do not letter anymore cut your hair or cut your own!! I'm sure the teacher will be making it clear to the entire class please don't cut peoples hair

This happens in schools all the time. Don’t make a drama out of it. Maybe have a word with your DC & tell her not to cut her hair or ask a friend to do it!
