What is mean is I have 4 month old and I have a cot in living room for day time and one upstairs for bedtime. Is it okay to leave In the cot until I go to bed? Or should I be taking him upstairs and putting monitor on?

I go to be normally 10-10:30 and then transfer him to his cot in our room? Is this okay

Yes of course it is.

Yes that is what I did. Baby stayed in the lounge cot with dimmed lights and low noise until I was ready for bed and then took baby upstairs. I only started leaving baby with monitor and frequently going to check on them at 6 months old. Bubba stayed with in same room as us until 11 months.

Thank you I just see so many people so many videos of babies in their room with
Monitors
On and it got me thinking maybe I should be doing that.

Mine are 6 & 4 now but at about 4 months we started putting them down upstairs with a monitor. We ended up bringing them down every now and then but tried to establish a kind of bedtime ready for when we moved them to their own room at 6-8 months.

Guidance is that they be in the same room as you for the first 6 months. I moved my first at 6 months and my second at 11 months to their own room, just do what works for you and your baby.

What you're doing is fine. All of babies sleeps for the first 6 months should be in the same room as you (or another adult)

Judgyjudgy · 24/06/2023 21:27

I did this too, I think it'd good as baby gets used to sleeping with noise

You’re supposed to keep baby in the same room as you for all sleeps until 6 months based on the sids guidelines but I found around this time baby was so unsettled in the living room while we watched tv. We trialed going to bed and watching tv with him in the crib beside the bed but it wasn’t fair on him with all the flashing lights etc as he tried to sleep 🤦🏼‍♀️ I then started putting him down in his crib in the bedroom for the night at 7.30ish and I’d go for a bath next door with the door open and a monitor on or just have to silently lie in bed! We had a breathing monitor on his nappy too. I then eventually got confident enough to sit in the living room and watch him on the monitor, going up to check all the time but this meant he had a proper night’s sleep every night and has slept great ever since. My friend’s baby was in her own room by this stage which obviously isn’t advised but I think with the bedtime bit you have to weigh up the risks if it’s not working with baby’s sleep. You need a tiny bit of the day to yourself too, even if it’s just through the wall with the door open 🙈

The advice is that you are in the same room for all sleeps (that includes naps and night sleep) until 6 months. So just have the cot wherever you are, although tv and bright lights may disturb sleep from around this age as they become more alert around this age.
