8 month old gasping?

Sorry if this is a silly post guys but I’m a FTM and can’t stop stressing. My 8 month old DC is perfectly healthy, and he’s currently teething. He has gum pain and he had a bit of nappy rash today too so he had a bit of pain. He was playing earlier, and I’m not sure if his gums started hurting him (his hand was in his mouth) but he gasped 3-4 times and it was a bit scary as it’s never happened before. Sounded a bit like he gasped for air but since then he’s been absolutely fine and healthy. This hasn’t ever happened before so I’m thinking it could have been because of the pain? I’ve given him calpol and also applied bonjela to help him but I’m still scared? Do you guys think I should get him checked out tomorrow? Is it normal? It lasted for less than 10 seconds and hasn’t happened again

He’s still awake and is playing happily with his dad.

Kindly - I thinking maybe you should go see a doctor to talk about post natal anxiety?

dreamerkr · 22/06/2023 22:31

Could it be choking? He ate an hour before this happened so I don’t think so but maybe? Idk :(

You’re probably right as I definitely am really anxious about every tiny little thing. Even though he’s absolutely fine now I’m still scared and I don’t want to sleep in case it happens again

If he does it again try and look at his chest and see if it is sucking in under his ribs, if so he needs medical help. If in any doubt at all though contact 111, medical professionals are generally brilliant with babies and prefer over cautious parents to the alternative.

It’s probably not, sometimes babies kind of gasp when excited.

Thank you so much for your reply. I don’t think it will happen again (I hope not) fingers crossed, as he’s completely normal now. If it doesn’t happen again then I shouldn’t contact GP tomorrow? Sorry for so many questions guys

Maybe contact your health visitor? They’re more likely to no about developmental habits than a GP so may be able to reassure you, and I’m sure they’d tell you if it’s GP worthy. But there is nothing wrong with trusting your gut, if something changes contact 111 for advice.

I’m scared because it’s the first time that it happened and also DS’s grandparents too got worried seeing him. Right now he’s laughing at me standing by the bed 😂

Definitely contact your GP or use 111 if you have a concern. That said...

My 6 month old has been occasionally doing a weird breaths that sound like he is struggling to breath (like if you were to mimic gasping). The good news is, he is perfectly happy and well. In fact, he seems quite pleased after making the noise... so the conclusion is it is just a new, exciting, terrifying thing he has learnt how to do.

I never thought I'd miss the pterodactyl screeches we had two weeks ago!

I would say see a doctor to rule out asthma.

I would deffo advise getting anything your worried about checked out. Mother's intuition and all that. However my DS did something like that. It was kind of what you would do if a big gust of wind hit you sort of gasp? Turns out it was him learning he could breath through his mouth. Only did it for a couple of weeks.
