Toddler bed or single bed?

Hi there,

I’m planning to transition my DD 2.5 to a bed soon. She is in her cot and very happy, but is starting to out grow it.

Her cot is a cot bed, so I can take down one side to start the transition.

My question is, do I need to buy the toddler size or is a regular single bed safe? I plan to attach sides to prevent falls. The toddler size are usually not as high off the ground I notice.

Any tips or advice welcomed.

A single bed is absolutely fine and, as long as you don't buy a particularly high one, it'll be fine (I'd argue safer) without rails.

Toddler beds are a pain because it can be hard to get sheets that fit properly. Much better to go straight to single bed and buy nice bedding that'll last years.

DD had a toddler bed but only because a friend handed it down to us. I didn't attach the rail on it as the capacity for her to get trapped and hurt herself seemed a greater danger than her plopping gently onto the carpeted floor in the night. She fell out around three times (stayed asleep each time) and then just knew where the edge of the bed was and stopped falling out - a very useful skill so that when you stay at hotels/other people's houses you don't have to worry about them falling out of bed there.

we put both of ours straight into singles .. it was fine and so cute them looking tiny again .

Both mine went straight into singles with a bed guard. IKEA do a pretty cheap wood frame one that is nice and low.

Our child moved straight to a double bed, because that's what we had and weren't in a position to buy a dedicated child's bed at the time. We didn't put guard rails on, just some cushions on the floor so that on the few times they fell out of bed they didn't hurt themselves.

We're moving house now and have bought a 120x200cm bed as that should last them a decent amount of time.
